Well, I have a cat, so I guess I get it. But foraging for a live kill substantial enough to make a meal makes sense for a water creature.

that's not what happened. the cat was growling at it, so it bit off the cat's head.

Nope that's pretty much what happened. The scientist told Eliza that he needed a live protein diet, but he hadn't been getting it so he went for food. The cat picked up on why he was there and felt danger so hissed, but the reason he ate the cat was because he was starving.
