"I can forgive racism but I draw the line at cruelty to animals."

Not saying you are racist, OP, that's just the first thing that popped into my mind.

Are you...Egyptian?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I have a cat, so I guess I get it. But foraging for a live kill substantial enough to make a meal makes sense for a water creature.

Re: Are you...Egyptian?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
that's not what happened. the cat was growling at it, so it bit off the cat's head.

Haven't seen this and now I won't. :-/ I hate pets - particularly cats - dying in shows. For one, I like animals, but for another, it feels like such a cliche way to conjure quick, cheap horror. It annoys me more with cats than dogs, because dogs usually get "hero" deaths where they go out barking/defending the humans, but the cat deaths are often comic relief, or done after really obvious close ups of the cat for all the show so you DON'T FORGET THERE IS A CAT. Any drama/horror that has lots of close ups of a pet cat means the cat is going to die. Fuuuck that. And no one ever mourns the pet, except maybe a comical side character for lolz ("haha crazy cat lady Janice is so upset that Mr. Fluffybutt disappeared").

I was really pissed that a certain season 2 of a certain Netflix show I just caught up on recently pulled the same cheap gag. Bleh to killing household pets for a little bit of drama.

In fish dude's defense, he did seem remorseful afterwards and didn't seem to be aggressive towards the other cats once he realized they weren't for eating.

Then you're not as understanding as Elisa and Giles. I didn't like seeing an adorable cat get beheaded either but people's reactions to this are making me roll my eyes. It's supposed to be uncomfortable. It's one of the few stories like this I've ever seen to really challenge the viewer's assumption that they would be able to deal with a very alien entity that doesn't understand our norms. I have a cat and I would be screaming. But it made me think about that.

Posts like this piss me off so much.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sick of people getting so upset over the cat scene and not about the brutal way Strickland tortured Dmitri, abused the fish man, threatened Zelda and sexually harassed Elisa.

Nooooo let's hate the fish man for getting scared in a strange land and thinking a cat is food because he doesn't know pets aren't a snack. Never mind he is shown afterwards looking sorry for it and NOT eating the other cats as soon as he's exposed to them again.

I get it. Animal deaths in movies are shocking and sad, but Strickland did far fucking worse.

I guess human suffering doesn't matter to you. That's what your secret sounds like.

I’ve had cats my whole life and I love my current fuzzball. I’d be devastated if something ate her. I’ve had screaming fits when raccoons and possums killed a couple of my hens, but I’ve never tried to kill a raccoon or a possum and I don’t wish them dead, even the ones whose trips through the henhouse have ended with me sobbing as I dug a small sad grave at 3:00 am. I haven’t eaten meat in over 20 years.

And the fishman isn’t an animal; once he understood that he’d upset Giles and cats weren’t for eating, he apologised to Giles and tried to befriend the other cats. Even regular old humans don’t instinctively understand a difference between pets and food, they have to be taught, and it varies by culture, which is why it’s not legal in the US to eat dogs, horses, or cats, but perfectly normal elsewhere. Do you wish people who eat cats horrifically experimented on and murdered by psychotic government agents, too?

I understand the initial shock and horror. I have multiple cats at home, and I am one whisker away from being the proverbial crazy cat lady, as is my Best Beloved. And yet, I ultimately understood. If Giles could forgive and understand, even in an incomplete way, then so could I, the omniscient viewer, who understood that this is a truly alien, albeit intelligent, entity. Who, as others have said, had been tortured physically and mentally, in an absolutely strange environment; not fed - undoubtedly almost starving, with the exception of the egg protein she brought for him - and then bundled off to yet another strange place.

Once he realized that this was not a wild animal that was good for eating, he stopped.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Welp. Never seeing this. I don't care about the intent or the aftermath, I'm just never seeing it. I stopped Boondock Saints when the cat was shot. I stopped Anchorman when the dog was kicked off a bridge. I'm not here for a cat getting its head bit off.

My cat is 18 years old, and I've had him for that long.

All I can say is that Mr. Fishman there would not be in such nice shape for very long if that were my cat. And neither would any human.

I feel like I'm remembering this scene differently than other people responding to this secret. Yet again, a cat in a film/tv show gets brutally killed and the characters respond with "Aw shucks, what an unfortunate misunderstanding... *two seconds of sad*... Oh well!".

Meanwhile, other films kill animals and it's the greatest tragedy to befall cinema. Yes, I'm tired of it. Maybe I should just be happy it wasn't another comedy cat death....

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I’m a proud cat lady myself with the sweaters to prove it, but something about this secret and some of the comments strike me as specious. I think part of that is because fandom is full of human characters who kill innocent people due to being abused/torture/otherwise sad circumstances, and we’re generally expected to take those circumstances into consideration.

Biting the cat's head off is a cheesy gimmick to show how alien the fish guy is and people are falling all over themselves defending the fish guy. This is rich.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I've never rolled my eyes so hard at this many F!Sers at once before.

An alien eats a cat for food. Most of us eat smarter animals than cats all the time, and we do so knowing full well that we're free to choose from a huge number of alternative nutrient sources. As far as I'm concerned, fishguy is less reprehensible than I am for the bacon I'm going to have for breakfast tomorrow.

ignoring the fact that 90% of this thread is a plague on humanity along with every person who made the decision to write cheap violent garbage like that into the movie, this damn picture could have used a link so that i didn't spend the rest of the night upset. thanks a fucking lot, mods. one shoddy animal abuse cw is not cutting it when i literally had scrolled into the image not 2 lines down before getting any opportunity to read it.

oh, and don't lecture me about 'wah hdu get upset about a cat and all animals are the same!!' bc i would be just as upset if it was a rat, a monkey, a snake, anything else with a human using another species as violent shock fodder. it's garbage and this director has always been garbage.
