Thank you, anon -- I was considering seeing this but animal cruelty really bothers me in movies and books. I can abide abuse to humans, even kids, but not animals. I know it's all fictional obviously but the animals just stick with me, ughhh.

I think for me, it's that no one will disagree that it's wrong if the victim is a human. We all know it's wrong. Plus, the movie/whatever probably stars humans and was definitely made by humans so it's not a sense of "the director hates cats, let's have a funny cat death scene".

I don't like seeing kids get hurt either, though with bad writing/acting kids getting hurt or dying in fiction often comes across a bit cheesy more than anything. But point is, people know kids getting hurt/killed is a bad thing and isn't funny. When animals die on screen, it's often used as comic relief or cheap drama, and I'm not always clear that there's an overwhelming sense of "this is a sad and horrible thing". Not everyone gives a shit about animals while they are obligated to give a shit about humans. To me, that's the difference.

But in this movie the cat’s death, while it’s not presented as a great and horrific tragedy, is shown to be a sad screwup in the same way that, say, someone who routinely ate rabbit and had no context for people keeping pet bunnies caught and ate one without knowing it was someone’s escaped beloved pet, and then felt terrible and apologised to the owner of the rabbit when the situation was explained. The cat owner isn’t shown to be stupid or pathetic for mourning his cat or anything. Like, no, the cat’s death isn’t all about the cat and there’s no sad swelling violin music, but it’s not treated as no big deal.
