Removing soda stains?

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-02-03 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So, being me, I managed to ruin the one good thing that has happened to me on the job front. I went to the local law library to do the research for the local attorney. I had the case files in my tote because they didn't fit in my briefcase. I had my lunch in the same back. I wasn't expecting a new, unopened soda bottle to leak.

I've got the pages laid out all over the house to dry. But I'm worried some of them might end up stained. Is there anything I can do about that?

Not really? If you've got access to a good scanner/photocopier, then once they're dry you can try making copies and hope that the discoloration is light enough to not get picked up by the copier. Of course, if they've got original signatures, seals, etc. on them, that's not an option.

Sadly, I don't think so. Even if you'd just spilled plain water, it's going to wrinkle up the paper as it dries. :(

According to google and my mother, if you iron them on a low heat (with a towel between the paper and the iron), that can remove wrinkles in paper.

Worth a try!

This is factually true. As is the vinegar/water trick in the link from viv_villion. (Source: I do art/document restoration at work.)

If you do this, make sure to deactivate any steam function the iron might have and ideally not iron in on a soft surface because that might crease the paper even worse. But it does work, to some extent, depending on the damage.

I found this but it looks pretty laborious:

But if they do get stained just explain what happened. It probably won't be the first time.

As long as the staining/wrinkling doesn't render the documents illegible, you'll be okay. I doubt this is the first time someone's spilled their drink on the case files. Maybe the first time the drink was just soda -- most of the lawyers I know pickle their livers regularly.
