Politics and fandoms

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a very controversial question, I hope.

If you're a liberal, are there any conservative fictional characters or real life actors or whatever that you like? If you're a conservative, are there any liberal ones you like?

Unless a show is political, I can't say I've ever thought about what political party my favorite characters would be.

But I guess, Ron Swanson is conservative and I love him.

For actors, I try to avoid that knowledge.

I also love Ron. But then, he's also a common sense conservative, and I respect that. (I also know conservatives IRL like that. Sure, they have very different views, but it's not in a Trumpian way.)

I can do Ron Swanson.

I dunno, real-world politics doesn't really come into most of the media I end up watching.

What about the alternative. I think I might count as left by my own standards, but by current norms it feels like I'm a classified as a right winger. So with that in mind, any right wing people who like big old lefties?

For me, I always liked Ollie Queen.

This is so me. Lifelong liberal, but this decade has stripped me of any and all political identity. Down is up and up is down.

Mac Taylor from CSI New York is cool. If more conservatives were like him I wouldn't have such a problem with them.

I <3 Tommy Vercetti even though he doesn’t pay his taxes.

I'm interested in characters who are military/mercenary/survivalist/off-grid types with lots of weapons and maybe some paranoia. That's a lot of things people associate with far-right political leanings.

I support very strict gun control laws. I just like watching fictional things go boom sometimes.

I like Jayne from Firefly, but I hear the actor has some strong views.

Oh man, does the Jayne actor have, err, strong views? Is he actually like his character irl?

I'm fairly certain Red Foreman's a conservative, but I still think he's great.

Eric made a quip at one point about Red liking Nixon, so yeah, definitely a conservative.

Not exactly a political orientation but I love Dr. Kiriko from Black Jack even though he is pro-euthanasia (and makes his living practicing it) and I'm basically against it.

I always thought Arnold Vinick (West Wing) would have made a better president than Matt Santos. He was reasonable, experienced, and listened to people.

Heh. Somewhere I actually have a "Democrats for Vinick" icon that I maed way back in the day.

I liked Will McAvoy from The Newsroom. But then, he wasn't very convincing as a Republican. The show even lampshaded that by having the character acknowledge that political people often referred to him as a RINO (Republican In Name Only).
