What is the most emotionally devastated you've been at a peice of media?

When Lane Pryce killed himself on the Mad Men episode that aired right after I'd come home from a stay at a psychiatric facility.

I'm still not over what they did to Donna Noble and I never will be.

After I watched "Wolf Creek" on a movie channel. There were warnings beforehand, like they literally said, "so be warned, this is intense", and I was not prepared. That film was harrowing. It haunted me.

I cried for about 3 days when Teen Wolf killed off Allison Argent.

Saving Private Ryan when the German slow-stabs Mellish while whispering "Shh-sh-sh..." I was 15 and it shook me to the core. Now anytime someone is being slowly killed on a show I squeal into a pillow until it's over. Kill Bill, Die Hard, a million bullets or blood geysers, no big, but slow stabs are the WORST. Unfortunately I like action and fantasy so there's lots of swords and it happens (or almost happens) a lot.

Spoilers for the last season of Angel

Honestly, Fred dying. (Yes, even more than The Body.) It just...it took the whole episode, and it all felt like a ticking clock to the thing no one knew how to stop, and her last words, and just everything.

Illyria was cool, and the only character I think had a shot at living through the final battle we didn't get to see. But the way she arrived was an insane punch in the gut.

When Hughes died on FMA. I thought for sure he was gonna be okay, that somebody would find him in time. No way would they let the comic relief family man die. Yeah, I was so wrong and his death hurt me for days.

I wasn't as emotionally invested but that was how I felt when L died in Death Note. I kept thinking "Oh, he's not really dead, he's pretending to be dead and he's going to come back and surprise everybody." When I finally realized he was not going to do that I got very uninterested and never finished reading.

I felt the same. I think the manga made L's death so abrupt and unexpected, I just assumed L had somehow secretly outwitted Light and was going to pop back. But no... really dead. The anime made it a lot more clear and gave it more build-up.

Same. Death Note got really boring after L died.

Dead Poets Society. Quite a lot of the boys being forced to betray their mentor, but when Neil kills himself...holy fuck.

And the, of course, 'O Captain, my Captain....'
*fails*

Also, in a good way, when i was tiny; the ending of Born Free.

The Last Guardian's ending broke me in half. I mean proper sobbing, hiccuping crying. I think some other media have probably had a more profound or long-lasting effect, but I've never experienced such a sudden, emotional gut-punch ending that made me cry that hard.

There are three different times that come to mind.

They each hit differently because of my age and experience.

Mr. Hooper dying on Sesame Street. I'm not sure I really fully grasped it as I was 7 at the time, but I felt so bad for Big Bird.

Sandy, Carol's boyfriend, on Growing Pains. It seemed like it was going to be okay, but then it wasn't, out of nowhere. And I was 14 and relating to teen characters.

The episode of NewsRadio after Phil Hartman was killed, where the other characters find out about the death of his character Bill McNeil. The events surrounding it made it very difficult.

The ending of Persona 3. It was the straw that broke the camel's back, basically. I was on the brink of a major depressive phase and just reading spoilers about the end kicked me right over. I'm kind of glad I read those spoilers and didn't play it without knowing. I haven't finished the game.

Dumbledore's death, oddly enough. Fortunately, I was so in denial that I wrote up this insane crack theory about how his death was a setup and he was actually still alive. When I was done, I snapped out of it and had a good laugh. (Still think his death was sad, but I'm no longer devastated by it.)
