I was in the Sherlock fandom for six years. I saw a LOT in that time and got to know the fandom really well. And I can say that I never once saw anyone saying that just simply shipping johnlock or shipping toplock was pedophilia. I'm sure it happened, but I can say for a fact that it was really uncommon.

I DID see a few people saying that shipping sherlock at all was acephobic, but it wasn't a popular viewpoint, even in the early days when ace!sherlock was morea popular ad fanon.

The TJLC shit, that was real and widespread. The anti noncon/pedo wank was real and not super widespread, but so overwhelmingly potent that I cant really argue it wasnt a major fandom-wide blow up.

But the wank you're describing didnt happen the way you're describing it. It was a huge, complicated mess, and I cant count the number of times I've seen someone who wasnt there give an inaccurate account of what it was really like and what people were really actually saying. There was a lot of nasty wank. But the vast majority of the anti-noncon/underage wank absolutely WAS a handful of people. A big handful, but a handful.

Ayyyy! fellow Sherlockian *fistbump*

I was in the Sherlock fandom during the 221B Con wank. It was fucking everywhere for a while, everybody was aware of it. But when it came to who was actually doing all the horrible wanky shit people are always talking about, there were only a few named users.

There were quite a few people on both sides getting hateful anon messages for a while, though, so maybe that's what people mean when they talk about there were so many shitty Sherlock fans, I don't know. I don't really count anon hate the same as documented fan-on-fan infighting when it comes to wank. Anon hate sucks, but every large fandom has it.

After all of that went down, I never knew how to discuss Sherlock fandom with people and mostly stopped admitting I was a fan because I had no real understanding of what was going on (I read someone's write-up and it certainly sounded like a problem with a small number of people, but everyone acted like the entire fandom was going down in flames). While I considered myself to be in the fandom, my only extensive participation (beyond just reading fic) was talking with fannish people I already knew from before the show ever aired who, apparently, happen to not be people prone to getting wanky.

I definitely heard about the wank, but had no idea of the scale. I also tend to take people calling a fandom a dumpster fire with a grain of salt since a) it's easy to look in from the outside, see the biggest mess, and assume that's normal, and b) people are prone to slamming other fandoms so they can feel better about the crazypants stuff going on in their own fandoms.
