After all of that went down, I never knew how to discuss Sherlock fandom with people and mostly stopped admitting I was a fan because I had no real understanding of what was going on (I read someone's write-up and it certainly sounded like a problem with a small number of people, but everyone acted like the entire fandom was going down in flames). While I considered myself to be in the fandom, my only extensive participation (beyond just reading fic) was talking with fannish people I already knew from before the show ever aired who, apparently, happen to not be people prone to getting wanky.

I definitely heard about the wank, but had no idea of the scale. I also tend to take people calling a fandom a dumpster fire with a grain of salt since a) it's easy to look in from the outside, see the biggest mess, and assume that's normal, and b) people are prone to slamming other fandoms so they can feel better about the crazypants stuff going on in their own fandoms.
