You're making the mistake of thinking that the total viewing audience of a show consists of the fandom. There's no denying that the fandom can be very vocal, very nuts and very into two dudes banging. But even highly dedicated fandoms aren't enough to keep a show going for 13 seasons, otherwise Firefly would still be on. For that, you need a significant percentage of people who are watching it and who aren't crazy tinhatters who think Wincest or Destiel is endgame. The same could be said of other equally large, nutjob-filled fandoms like Dr. Who or Sherlock.
