Who do you think is watching supernatural? What do you think it is they ejoy about the show? The writing? The acting?

No, they are watching that show to get off, and that's perfectly fine. There to assume a show about the same stuff, but without the benefit of hot men, would appeal to anyone watching SPN. They are fundamentally different audiences. Like Xena and Hercules, very little cross over between those fans originally.

Like, I enjoyed the hell out of sucker punch, but I'm not watching the sequel featuring Scott Glenn wrestling shirtless with orcs and robo-samurais in the snow. It's not for me.

Exactly. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but all I've ever seen from this damn fandom is people talking about either Sam, or Castiel riding Dean's dick. Or Dean being hot in general. And I guess daddy issues are a thing, too. I watched the first eight episodes and got bored, because where Dean is kind of hot, he's not hot enough to hold my gaze for very long apparently, and if there is gay in SPN, it took too long to happen.

Nah, there's no gay in Supernatural (at least not among the main three dudes), just a bunch of deeply emotional scenes and lines that could be read as gay (especially with yaoi goggles on). Personally, I love those scenes and that's one of the reasons I still watch it. Well, that and all the whump.

SA

Makes sense.

I might give it another chance someday, but it was a slog the first time I tried (which was something like 7-8 years ago?) Also, given how the fandom ships, I had the expectation that it'd be a hell of a lot gayer than it was, but that's on me for getting my info from the type of ships and fanworks that exist, and not the source material itself. I could still stand to get better about that, lol.

Lol I started watching it because fandom convinced me it was super gay too, nonny. And it took me a while to get into it because the first three seasons (with the exception of a couple episodes) were pretty boring, but I really started enjoying it around season four . . . only to lose interest halfway through season seven. Seasons eight and beyond aren't too bad though. So yeah, if you've got time or just need to have some background noise on, go ahead and give it another shot.

It's a show about badass dudes with a cool car who shoot demons

It's not crazy to think that men watch it, or that people would watch it for reasons other than beefcake

(Anonymous) 2018-02-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's in fandom, but actually the demographics have an even number of male and female viewers, and it's more popular in rural and conservative areas than in urban and liberal areas.

of course it is, it's disturbingly racist and sexist and violent

You're making the mistake of thinking that the total viewing audience of a show consists of the fandom. There's no denying that the fandom can be very vocal, very nuts and very into two dudes banging. But even highly dedicated fandoms aren't enough to keep a show going for 13 seasons, otherwise Firefly would still be on. For that, you need a significant percentage of people who are watching it and who aren't crazy tinhatters who think Wincest or Destiel is endgame. The same could be said of other equally large, nutjob-filled fandoms like Dr. Who or Sherlock.
