Feedback about grammar, spelling, and punctuation is 99% worthless.

What? I would love to hear the un-logic that led you to that statement. SPaG is necessary to make a sentence understandable; for if you can't understand what is being said, how in hell can you enjoy it?

Heh. Never mind that your car's only got three wheels; there's a bit of bird poo on the roof here.

Ah. I understand now. You're a moron. Thanks for clearing that one up.

*thumbs up* See you at the Hugos lol

For your analogy to work in the context of the secret, the fic would have to suck, and then you'd be mentioning all the grammatical errors on top of that. The secret was about how nitpicks ruin positive 'I love this so much!' comments, not how nitpicks ruin all comments.

Re: n!f1

I borrowed the secret as a springboard to a wider issue, but thinking about it, nitpicks are just as worthless in the context of the secret - if not more so, since they masquerade as useful feedback, and they're not.

I'm dead serious, it's not just the annoying grammar fascist thing. Writers, especially beginners, get hung up on tiny details like paper size and whether to use z-spellings, while neglecting much more important issues like whether their narrative starts in the right place or whether their characters make any difference by being in the story, etc. Now that's worthwhile feedback.

You do make very valid points, especially on the bit about narration positioning and the characters, but I think to be a truly great writer, you have to be able to do well on the little things, too.

I also think that while these nitpicks aren't always a good thing in the context of fandom, they can help a writer learn how to put a sentence together properly, and that's extremely useful in the business world. I realize that a great majority of fan fic writers are high-schoolers and probably look at the nitpick-y reviews and ignore them. However, if a small portion of them takes that information away and uses it outside of fan fiction, then it was advice well given.

Interesting point there. Although let us hope that teh Intarwebs are not the only source of information on spelling etc for the young 'uns. :-)

Ha. I sincerely hope not!

you're so right. Time and time I do the nitpick and realize the car is practically dragging along the ground -- without any wheels at all!

Re: n!f1

I had to train myself to quit spellchecking all the time instead of working.

Not true. It depends on the timing and the context. Obsessing over grammar and spelling can be a way to procrastinate or to insult someone, but someone needs to check that grammar eventually. A friendly suggestion about a confusing sentence or missing letter (especially an important one) can be helpful to authors that care about communicating with their audience.

I'll overlook an occasional typo, especially in a fantastic story. However, lack of spell-checking and editing adds insult to injury, when I've just paid $20 for a story filled with errors. It's hard to care, if the author and editors don't.
