Tea with Mr Tumnus - or any Narnian food. I put this down to rationing having been in force for so long.

What a coincidence, I was just rereading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I remembered the tea with Mr. Tumnus fondly but after rereading it, it's kind of funny that it involves toast in three different forms. As you say, it's probably down to rationing and not having proper bread.

And really it was a wonderful tea. There was a nice brown egg, lightly boiled, for each of them, and then sardines on toast, and then buttered toast, and then toast with honey, and then a sugar-topped cake.

I'm down with everything but the sardines, tbh.

Sardines are good for you! They are high in calcium, iron, and omega-3s and low in mercury. ~*THE MORE YOU KNOW*~

I'm just amused by all the different forms of toast and how the CAKE is like an afterthought.

I don't remember tea with Mr. Tumnus, but I remember being a kid with no idea what Turkish Delight was and thinking Edmund was enjoying, like, savory turkey breast medallions or something.

I think it's part of why I really like poultry when it's cold out.

I love all Lewis' food scenes in the Narnia books except for the Last Battle. A writer as imaginative as he was should have come up with a better Heaven than everybody does nothing but run and eat fruit. That is not Heaven. That is a very low-budget weight loss spa.

The Last Battle is my least favorite Narnia book for many reasons, but you made me giggle. ;D
