Didn't someone leave a comment saying exactly that a few weeks ago?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-11 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's happened before, someone goes through and finds old comments to submit as secrets when we're low.

It's annoying in this instance just because I'm pretty sure I responded to the original comment and I don't remember what I said so now I have to go try and fucking find it. But that's just me.

I did...ish...and I still disagree with this one.

Like he's not going to be fanon, sure, but why people don't count the comics as canon when they were written with at least TFA in mind...I kind of get it, but I don't agree.

MTE (and I thought this was a verbatim secret repeat so I'm not sure it could have been you?)

There was a *lot* of discussion on Poe-related topics but this is the specific post that the secret came from:

People don't count the comics because most people who see Star Wars movies (which is a large swath of the human race, not just big Star Wars fans) don't read the comics. I'm not chasing down a bunch of supplementary material for a movie franchise I'm mostly only superficially interested in. The fact that they're canon means nothing. The movies need to stand on their own. I have no issue with Poe being OOC or inconsistent because I will just take what the movies give me, whether I like it or not, and not worry about how well that works with any supplementary material (or fanon).

THIS

And I shouldn't have to. Additional material is great, but it shouldn't affect the main material.

I don't think all viewers should chase down all supplementary material buti think that screen writers and directors should and at least rake the characterisations within into consideration if it's official supplementary material.

ayrt

That's an excellent point and I agree.

However, I'm not going to base my judgement of whether a character in a movie is OOC based on how the character was portrayed in a tie-in comic I didn't read and might not even be aware of.

If we had to count supplementary materials as canon, then that means that Alex Irvine’s incredibly terrible Pacific Rim novelization is canon for that movie (its the official novelization after all!). In it, he made Stacker Pentecost be a convicted arsonist before he got picked up to pilot Jaegers (like, literally picked up out of his prison sentence, I think, because how else would a black guy have gotten into that position of power?). So. . .. yeah. >_> Supplementary canon is cool, and I’m down with it, but it’s importance is definitely tiered.
