Stupid foreigner here: what makes the girl scout cookies so popular? Are they really so much better than the other cookies or is it just good branding?

Trying them against generic competitor I can get year round and I definitely notice a difference in taste? I just can't put my finger on it.

Some of it is branding.

Some of it is the fact that they're not available year round, so it's a bit of an event when they go on sale.

And some of it is quality - they're legitimately really, really good cookies.

I've tried the store version and there's something different between them and the cookies sold by the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout ones do taste better to me.

It's complicated. They're good, but a big part of why people are so enthusiastic about them is that they're only available for a limited time every year. The relatively rarity drives demand and yearning, IMO.

Mind you, you can get knock offs that are very nearly as good. Keebler makes a grasshopper cookie that's very much like a Thin Mint, Aldi has knock offs of Thin Mints, Tagalongs and Samoas that are delicious and cheaper AND available year round. But for a lot of people, either they're not exactly the same, or they're not exactly the same mentally and emotionally, if that makes sense. They want the "real" thing.

YMMV, I found the Keebler knock-offs and Aldi knock-offs to not taste nearly as good. Cheaper, yeah, but with all the problems that comes from why the price is dropped (quality of ingredients).

It's a matter of scarcity. You can't buy them in stores, so you have to find either a Girl Scout who will take your order or a Girl Scout troop with a booth set up (neither of those things are incredibly difficult, but it adds a layer of effort or luck). They're also only available during a certain time of the year. It's like if there's a food you can only really find at Christmas - it's not necessarily the best thing ever, but the fact that you can't just have it whenever you want makes it special.

They do have a booth locator on their website! I have traveled long and far to find the cookies, and I will do so until they no longer make cookies. Also, you get to support Girl Scouts in your neighborhood!
