I use it when there's some major plot point that's covered by the usual warnings, but that I don't want spoiled before reading. I know that people use it for a lot more reasons though, like not getting the warning system or wanting to be on the safe side.

This. This. Thank you. When people discussed the tag's applicable uses back in the pre-tumblr days, this was by far the dominant way that people considered it useful. It makes sense. It nicely fills a gap in the tagging system, allowing people to be vague and not spoil their fics without running the risk of triggering (or just really upsetting) their readers.
