So I downloaded the Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition (NOT A New Empire) on Google/Android, but if I run it, it wants access to my media/photos/etc. Why? What the hell could it possibly need with a bunch of stupid selfies and group shots? I don't get it, so I backed out of that shit.

It might just need access to the app itself and not the photos already saved there? Some games (dating sims etc) save scene shots etc when you pass certain 'moments'? Maybe it's something like that.

Makes sense, I guess, though I doubt I'll be doing anything with screenshots on this device.

That usually means it has the ability to save screenshots or something of that nature. Declining access shouldn't affect game play.

For the record, you're the one who made the leap from a question to OMG GOVERNMENT PARANOIA. Apparently asking a question about a function that a person finds confusing is justification to insult them and accuse them of paranoia.

I've heard of things like flashlight apps that want access to your location and camera. That could just an issue of recycling code or something and not for a nefarious purpose, but it's still creepy and weird and I probably would avoid an app like that. This situation makes sense, but there's nothing weird about wanting to know WHY an app needs access to certain things.

They want access to your camera because they literally use the flash of the camera for the flashlight function.

It's just to save screenshots/videos from in-game. It's not like... selling your selfies to China or something.
