The "always" thing has been covered upthread.

The author is not always available. It seems my phrasing confused people.
In the fandoms I've been in, almost all authors are available to respond to PMs in their own time, whether that time is an hour or a week. They get back to you eventually.

This is true for me. I've gotten back to every potential reader who has ever PMd me to ask a question about one of my fics. It's also been true for the authors I've PMd myself. Usually they've been happy to answer my questions about their fic. Occasionally they've been less enthusiastic. But there's always been an answer.

Like others have said - i want to know what fandoms this is 'normal and accepted', because it's never been normal or even considered in any fandom i've been in.

Not op but I commented once or twice itt and tend to agree with the op's take. My main fandoms have been Sherlock, Suits, and TXF. They've all been great to be in (even sherlock despite th wank) and I've pm'd a tonne of authors in these fandoms to ask for deets about their fic before I gave it a go. I always got a response, usually super friendly telling me what I want to know.

Also I wouldnt always get a response in txf fandom because I didnt get in until after the show ended and people had left by then. But noncon and underage were almost nonexistent anyway. Character death was thea main one, and a surprising number of authors did, still reply when I asked about it.

This is a tough one because it's nice that they were friendly to you, but that the authors didn't bite your head off when you made inquiries doesn't indicate that they thought your inquiries were acceptable. If I picked a random active author from any fandom off of AO3, went to their Tumblr, and asked for details about one of their fics, they probably would give me the details, but their politeness wouldn't mean that my actions had been within the realm of what that fandom considered polite. Most people want to be helpful, but that doesn't make every request that is made of them reasonable.

One of my main fandoms is/was also Sherlock, and in that fandom I agree, it's definitely very standard. I'm had plenty of fandom friends groan to me over IM that they were waiting to hear back from an author about a fic they were chomping at the bit to read, like, "Should I just risk it? Oh I'd better not." A lot of fics even have author's notes encouraging people to ask the author about the fic if they weren't sure about anything - especially back in the fandom's heyday.

Also, people here's resistance to the idea of PMing authors is really inexplicable to me - not just because PMing authors has always been a totally reasonable thing to do in my experience, but because tumblr makes PMing fans to ask them about fannish stuff not just normal but utterly commonplace. Asks are so flipping normal it's not even funny, and a huge number of the asks I see on the regular are people asking something to do with someone's fic. And I've almost never seen anyone respond poorly to a reasonable, polite ask. If that's not commonplace in your fandoms I guess we just have extremely different experiences with fandom.

Never been in a fandom like that, and i've been in some big ones. And since OP said she's getting messages back from confused authors, it seems that it's just not something that happens across the board.

Hi, OP here, and yeah, sometimes an author would respond very briefly, not encouraging further correspondence. But more often than not, the responses I would get would be very friendly and inviting. In my experience, most authors want to talk about their fics.
