When did Sony movies become so hated?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sony movies have a terrible rap, to the point that if there is a trailer for a Sony movie (especially if it's animated) it is generally assumed by the internet to be a bad film even before it is released.

They have also made some weird creative decisions, which may have something to do with it - I still don't know who thought the Emoji Movie was a good idea, and I have no idea who they're appealing to with the planned Spider-Man spinoffs.

But plenty of movie studios put out bad movies and box-office bombs, so I guess I'm not sure why Sony is being singled out for mockery here and wonder when it started.

Has Sony put out any notably good movies?

Spiderman 2 was good.

Do you mean the 2004 one or the 2014 one? Because if you mean the 2004 one, that's probably too long ago for them to get credit for it

The 2004 one. Jumanji 2 was more recent and good

Baby Driver got very positive reviews.

And some of their movies, like the new Ghostbusters and Hotel Transylvania, have their fanbases (I know Ghostbusters is divisive, but it does have a following), and the new Jumanji movie did pretty well commercially and OK critically.

I think Baby Driver was distributed by Sony but not produced by them? Does that still count? I'm honestly not even sure

I like the new Ghostbusters a lot.

I would assume some of it was from that data breach.

It happened in December 2014. Scott Rudin was really insulting to a lot of people in the released emails among other things. Sony's reputation really suffered from that.

What was in the data breach that was so damning?

Emails about stars and then President Obama, stuff about projects, including scripts, actors' pay, lots of stuff
