"The quality of Danny Elfman's scores has gone down considerably lately and it's made me concerned for his well-being"

I was just listening to his music a few hours ago... but it was Oingo Boingo. Damn I'm old.

OP. Me too. I love them so much. But it worries me, y'know? I know he has a genetic hearing problem made worse by his years next to giant speakers, so I wonder if that could be a factor.

That is a scary thought. I hope he is OK.

A fellow Oingo Boingo listener! High-five.

*high-five* I saw them live once actually.

Now I'm jealous. Where/when did you see them and how were they? I didn't get into their music until a few years after they broke up. :(

It was the Palace in Los Angeles and I'm pretty sure it was 1983.

Me too! Chicago, 1994.

Or he could just have been doing this for a lot of years and be slightly uninspired? It happens. He's brilliant but he might need invigoration from a new source of inspiration. Learning a new instrument or a studying a new-to-you historical musical source will do that. Don't give up on him. :)

He is my favorite composer so I get where you're coming from, OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-17 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I could never give up on him.

I don't get any content on that article. There's the picture of him, a poll about sandwiches, sidebar links to other articles, and a bunch of grey formatted like text but with no actual text.

Yeah, I would not call it the best website. It doesn't even have the date for the event on the page!

And then they talk a whole bunch about his achievements in film, but absolutely nothing about his 17 years with Oingo Boing (or the Mystic Knights).

I get the impression that he feels about his Oingo Boingo days much the way Christopher Lee did about his Hammer days in his later years (though perhaps without Lee's grouchiness): it was good times, but they are long over and he doesn't have anything to discuss about them anymore.

I don't know what Christopher Lee's Hammer days are?

It was the Omaha Community Playhouse that did the background article, not Danny; they're the ones that didn't mention OB. Danny has OB prominently mentioned in his "Who is Elfman?" biography on his own website.

http://elfman.cinemusic.net/about_elfman.html

I think he's plenty proud of OB and what they achieved. It's just that he went partially deaf achieving it so yeah, there's some bitterness there, too.

He's spoken about that too. It's partially from those days, but it's also partially genetic.

This might help OP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vfqkvwW2fs Around 5:25 Elfman makes a comment, but the whole video is relevant. I think Elfman will explain your worry at about the 6 minute mark.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-17 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's good.

...but now I think about how his voice has changed so much. His speaking has always been somewhat nasal and deep but you can tell he smokes now (I think that's reflected in how he looks too).
