I think the reason why hatesex is quite popular is the fact that hate is such a passionate emotion. To really hate someone requires a great deal of emotional energy -- most people would argue that love and hate are quite similar.

My interpretation of it only applies to myself. As in, I hate a character, but still strangely want to fuck him. And then maybe kill him, or utterly destroy him, yadda yadda. I don't usually apply it between two different characters, though.
