It's not that I need to know everything that happens in a fic. It's that I'm trying to separate the relatively small number of fics that I want to read from the much larger number that I have no interest whatsoever in reading. And tags are sooooo useful in doing that. if a fic doesn't have any tags or at least a good summary, it's so much harder for me to figure out how likely I am to like the fic, there's not really any percentage in trying to read it.

Sure. But you're only making an educated guess, anyway. I fully understand tagging for major things like pairings and warnings for things like mature content, but some readers seem to expect a ridiculous amount of forewarning about plot spoilers. If that's what they want, then fine. But I dislike how entitled and pushy people can get about it.

Absolutely, it's an educated guess, but that's kind of the best that you can aim for.

And, like, I don't expect anyone to necessarily do tagging, and I'm grateful to people who do, because it does make it easier for me to find the fics that I want.

I'm just saying that the desire for tagging isn't necessarily about wanting to know the content of the fic before you read it.

TBH, the most disappointing fics I've ever read have had tags that seemed perfect.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
That seems kind of tautological

Things are always more disappointing if you think they're going to be good

Do you also say this when people express that the most disappointing fics they've read have been the most popular and highly recommended fics in their fandom?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
i think it's definitely true in that scenario as well

So what do you get out of pointing it out?
