I think you're taking posts like this more literally than they need to be taken or are supposed to be taken

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
The post OP refers to seems fairly succinct. What do you think it means?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's said with a certain degree of humor or irony, and is less a serious claim about the textual intent of Jane Austen.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Have you, like

ever been to tumblr

like ever

I mean I enjoy tumblr in many ways but the batshit is Real when it comes to projecting Special Diversity (head)canon onto their faves

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but yes, exactly. I'm puzzled that ayrt thinks the likeliest explanation is that OP is misinterpreting a post about how Henry Tilney isn't white, as if Tumblr isn't very well known for people theorizing about various characters being canoncially POC by citing quotes.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because of the way it was written.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's written in a fairly recognizable tumblr style. I guess you could call it semi humorous. I don't think that necessarily means it's 100% just kidding, particularly since this is kind of tumblr's thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
They still believe the myth that Beethoven was black (or the Mozart thing based on that silly ad).

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's possible, yes. I'm not sure how you can determine that is definitely the case here, or say for certain that OP is misinterpreting the post, however.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
OK.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if this whole thread is getting in the way of you wanting to believe that people aren't weird about characters being POC in canon. I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter, but unfortunately, I've seen too many examples that suggest that people aren't necessarily kidding about this.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I think it's less than entirely serious, OP disagrees, there's not much I can really say beyond that.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
That people who create posts like that often reply flippantly to critics doesn't mean they aren't serious posts.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
To some extent. I mean, it's not really either - it's not a joke but neither is it meant to be taken seriously. It's sort of in-between and complicated and slangy. And has to be taken in that light.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Or they could express themselves clearly instead of throwing out something that they know will cause confusion and then acting defensive or smug when some people predictably don't get the not-joke.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I mean.

Yeah, that's internet humor for you.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
And that means people can't sometimes be frustrated by it?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
True. I guess I just assumed that the secret was about the POC stuff and not the Internet humor based on the fact that OP mentioned it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're full of shit.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-20 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
