LOL WUT. If I were a fan of Rose, I'd be spitting nails right now over the fact that RTD shat on her character on his way out (i.e. making her even MORE obsessive than she already was, rather than letting her grow as a character) and Ten left her his cheap copy as a stopgap for her utter crazy to keep it from bleeding through to his universe.

...Instead, I love Donna. So I'm just heartbroken and bitter, har.

More obsessive? Actually I thought Rose was rather kick ass-take no prisoners. Or if you meant listening in on a teleconferencer and feeling hurt that didn't include her, because, hey, he didn't know she was there (nor was she likely to be there), I thought that was rather human. But the show came out and acknowleged that she was special, which should make the Rosefen happy. Not every companion gets thier own doctor as a going away present.

Look at Donna, she got a fist full of "LOL Not yours, can't have." And a huge-ass Broken Aesop (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenAesop): Let's convince Donna that she's more special than she thinks, but then once we've done that, let's wipe her mind so she can't possibly actually learn that lesson.

More obsessive, as she reveals in that scene on the TARDIS after Ten's non-regeneration that she was already trying to get back across the universes to him when everything started to go haywire. As in, she was willing to risk all existence to seem her Wuv again - she wasn't looking for him to try to save the universe. That came AFTER.

Yeah, well, dude, we knew she was in love with him from that tearful scene on the beach way back when he dumped her. Hell, Donna spent who knows how long a time following weirdness in the hopes of bumping into the Doctor again, and she wasn't even in love with him. One presumes that the alternate torchwood was working on negating whatever it was that forced him to dump him there in the alternate universe in the first place. And once the universe started collapsing they pushed the project forward.

...Alt!Torchwood was planning to bring Gallifrey back, then?

Because it was established S2 that the problem is that Time Lords aren't around to maintain stability between the universes anymore. Which Rose knows; and it's a job which I doubt humans could duplicate. So no, I think she's pretty much an irredeemable character at this point.

You are assuming:

a) the Doctor Who canon pays more than lip service to continuity and don't retcon the hell of the "ground rules" all the time. Weren't the Daleks already dead, like at least twice over?

b) It really would be destructive to the universe and that wasn't the Doctor's white-lieing way of fobbing her off to a universe where he presumed she'd be happy while pandering to his own apparent terror of commitment.

c) Mickey has specially resistant magic because apparently it's hunky dory that he stay on the who universe -- and why is it that no one is bothered by this?

and most of all

d) The canon uses anything remotely resembling logic when crafting their story lines.

You can blame Rose all you like for this, but the fault is the writers. She was just following the script.

a) and d) - this is entirely true. However, it's meta and not relevant to a discussion of a character within the context of the universe. Metatextual discussion really needs to be separate to avoid confusing these issues.

b) This was said during the Cyberman two-parter, so the Doctor's intimacy issues were not really at play.

c) Presumably, it would have worked fine for Rose to have stayed with the Doctor at the end of, "Journey's End," having gotten over before the boundaries sealed again. But Jackie was clearly unwilling to leave her, and both of them would have left Pete and Rose's brother. Mickey, on the other hand, had no family left in either 'verse.

You can blame Rose all you like for this, but the fault is the writers. She was just following the script.

Or: you can give Rose all the "kick-ass" credit you want, but she was just following the script.

Again, the point about meta. Obviously, Rose is not real, yes. But within the context of a fictional universe, I think Rose as a character has been incredibly selfish.

I mean, you're welcome to your own opinion of her, of course. I sort of feel like no matter what, you'll continue to defend her, and I'm bothered this might be actually upsetting to you, or something. I'm sorry if it is; I don't really hate Rose to the point of continuing any discussion if that's the case.

Re: 157

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't offend me or bother me, I'm not a big fan of Rose -- on the other hand I don't hate her with a passion either. She is one of 40 something companions -- no more, no less. I enjoyed her during her run, and I'm glad she's gone and there will be someone new. But just as I'm not particularly a fan of the "Rose is so special she's the bestest companion ever and no one will ever approach her companiony goodness" attidude, I also am not a fan of character hate. I honestly think not a moment of thought went into the conundrum of Rose coming back over for the Doctor -- and there continues not to be a moment of it. I think she was fobbed off as an expedience to facilitate a new companion with the first thing that came in the writers heads that sounded remotely believeable. And she came back with similar aplomb. To condemn her for things that it's implied she did off camera that were really simply the writers taking shortcuts seems -- well -- mean spirited.

I get you don't like the character -- but you got to balance this one thing out against two seasons worth of her on screen behavior.
