I'm loyal to a ridiculous degree, but if the band changes into a direction I don't enjoy listening to (e.g., suddenly they're writing house whereas before they were rock) I won't keep buying their music, regardless of loyalty. And if they've just lost creative steam and their music isn't good anymore, well, there's a lot of music out there, and a limit to my music budget.

Not really. I'm thinking specifically of U2, actually, and when they were past their prime and started incorporating electronica because they were kind of bored. Old dogs, but their new tricks weren't my thing.
