I feel the same way, but this happens to me in the library of all places. Everybody knows me, including the new staff. They see my face and go get my holds or tell me about the new releases that just came in that I might like. If a book I like is slated to be taken out of circulation and put on sale, they hold it for me in case I want to buy it. I know it's very stupid and whiny to complain about people who are being so friendly and going out of their way to help me, but it's a big library in a big city and I look pretty unremarkable, so how the hell do they know me on sight? Is it because I buy a shitload of brownies during the fundraisers or something?

At the library I work at, we're encouraged to address customers by name if we know them, and encouraged to learn customers names. I hate that as a customer, but the higher ups think it's all good customer service. Be engaging! Tell them about a library service they didn't know about! Recommend something to them!
