I used to do it for the hits and reviews(AO3 and kudos didn't exist back then), and I honestly wanted one of my fics to become an iconic epic. But nothing I wrote ever really caught on. I was middle-of-the-pack popular at best, and didn't write any fanfic for years.

Now I write for myself, then toss it up once a story is finished and let the chips fall where they may. I'm honestly a lot happier that way, and it's much less stressful than obsessing over being popular.
