Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of author are you?

Do you do it for the hits and kudos? Do you do it for yourself? Do you do it to contribute to a fandom? Do you hope your fic turns into the iconic epic of your fandom? Do you write shitfic for luls?

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can honestly say... I've been all of those authors at one point.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an odd case where the shitfic I wrote under a pseud became the iconic badfic for a pairing in a big fandom I wasn't even in.

Other than that, I write things to get them out of my head and post them in case anybody cares to read them, and don't care about hits or respond to comments. Like, "here's this story, if you want it. If not, whatever."

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I write out my plot bunnies and if a complete story comes from it then I post it online and forget about it. I've forced a few in the past to help keep a fandom active but was never happy with how they turned out and don't do it anymore. I'm only in dead fandoms now so it doesn't matter either way.

Usually because I have the itch of an idea that's not fully explored within the limited space of game narratives.

The only franchise I seriously wrote Fic for was because the world was interesting but the people in charge .... really rarely did anything interesting with it. They set up an amazing idea and plot but because it was intended for 7 year olds, they couldn't go as far as they wanted.

I wrote a nearly 37k word fanfic about my favorite character.

for myself and to contribute to a fandom. Haven't done it in a long time, though.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

To contribute to the fandom, pretty much. I like writing about the characters, and it's fun to add my take on canon to the fandom. It leads to fun discussion with other fans who comment on my fics, too, which is a nice bonus :).

I really don't pay attention to numbers or care whether or not my fics are well-known. If somebody reads them and likes them, that's enough to make me happy.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of those.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I write the fic I can't find anywhere. This is a lot of rare pairs in rare fandoms but I also end up with my own headcanons no one else shares in big fandoms and I've always been of the philosophy that the best way to convert people is to write a good fic.

I also write exchange fics, which I hope the recipient will like. But I never write a fic I'm not also interested in on some levels (although the request for a modern AU stretched my abilities quite a bit).

I would like comments, kudos, and bookmarks. I go to the trouble of posting my fic for this reason (and to sell my rare pairs/rare headcanons).

In theory, I would like to see someone discussing my fic. I would love if one of my fics was a standard, meaning that others agree with my headcanons or the characterization of the characters that I see. But I'm not sure how much criticism I can take so it's probably best no one gives me a second look.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

Options B and C, I guess. I mostly write fanfic because an idea's nagging at me, and if it turns into something interesting, I post because I figure maybe other fans will also enjoy it, and I consume enough fic that it only seems fair to put some of my efforts out there to pad my lonely little fandoms' fic counts a bit.

I can't really be bothered to track hits and kudos, and I'd be genuinely baffled if something I wrote turned into an iconic fic for the fandom I wrote it in.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I write because I have a specific itch for certain types of stories which I know other people are less likely to write (i.e., I know there aren't many people who write gore and horror fic so Iike to fill that niche myself even if I'm the only one who'll read it). Also, I tend to ship rare pairs so I like to make content for them.

Then sometimes I'm driven to write fanfic out of spite (you say I shouldn't ship this??? fuck you here's a 100k multichap of them!)

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much do it for myself and also to contribute to a fandom. But I also do it out of spite. I have written so much fic for this one pairing, mostly just to get it over the number of fics of my NOTP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At some point or another, I've been all of them. Now I mainly write for myself, but kudos are nice.

I write for fun mainly, I don't care about how many hits/kudos I get, comments are nice but I don't feel like I need them to keep writing. I only write whenever I get inspiration anyway so feedback for me doesn't inspire me to write more, it's just a nice thing to get if I do.

And I mostly write because there's an idea in my head that won't leave so I expunge it via fanfic and hey if someone else happens to like it too, cool.

I do it to make people happy or to write things I have't seen that I want to see written. Hits and kudos are nice because I know it means I'm making people happy. I don't do it to feel good about myself. Honestly I know I'm not a very good writer. But I've developed a nitch in my fandom, being the PWP and headcanon girl. And it makes people happy. Which makes me happy.

All of the above

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I write for me. I write ideas that appeal to me, that intrigue me, that I'm interested in seeing. I don't sign up for exchanges or fests because I've found I can't write for them, I don't care about them.

Most of my fanfic is unposted.

That being said, when I'm really struggling (I'm clinically diagnosed with depression and on both meds and in therapy for it) I tend to update more often, because hearing that people enjoy what I write (what I wrote for me) makes it easier to get through the day, just knowing I made other people happy and that even if I feel like I've got nothing of worth to offer people, they enjoyed my story and don't think I'm worthless.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do it for the hits and reviews(AO3 and kudos didn't exist back then), and I honestly wanted one of my fics to become an iconic epic. But nothing I wrote ever really caught on. I was middle-of-the-pack popular at best, and didn't write any fanfic for years.

Now I write for myself, then toss it up once a story is finished and let the chips fall where they may. I'm honestly a lot happier that way, and it's much less stressful than obsessing over being popular.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I write for me, so I can explore the ideas and universes I enjoy. But reviews are nice, too. I feel like it's icing on the cake when other people enjoy what I wrote, and I've made some good friends connecting with other people in my fandom this way.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I do it for myself and the fandom (and by fandom, I mean people who like the ships I like, and who are thirsting in the desert for a drop, a bloody drop of some shit featuring the pairings they like).

I'm also bad because I don't finish, start writing a bunch of drawer fic, and also never finish it. SO I'M IN IT FOR ME!

I like kudos, I like comments, but I only care about my fic getting into the hands of those who desperately need it. In that sense, I would hope that among those who enjoy my fic rec it to others, but I have no desire to BNF or any of that. I want "You inspired me to write a fic/remix Your fic/add this PWP I imagined based off of your fic (let's say it was a behind the scenes moment)/fanart of your fic" as long as you pointed to me, it'd be awesome.

I once had someone make a banner for a fic I wrote. It was super nice of them and it was quite lovely! That's my goal level.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I like to write fic. I like to read fic. I like to read what I write and so I think other people might enjoy it too. I like kudos and comments, though, since I feel the need to reply to every comment, it can be a little overwhelming if I get more than a few. I've occasionally written for prompts, not just because I liked the prompt, but because of the challenge of it (characters I don't usually write for or writing some behavior that seems like it would be really out of character and finding a way to make it make sense).

Another reason I post my fic, though, is to have it saved somewhere else.

I write first and foremost for myself. If somebody else enjoys it, that's awesome, but not necessary. Some of the fics I'm proudest of have hardly any hits, much less kudos or comments.

Re: Those who write fanfic:

(Anonymous) 2018-02-21 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not for hits or kudos. In fact, I have both of those disabled on my account, so I don't get to see them.

I write because I feel there's something missing in the canon I consumed. Some implication that I need to explore a bit deeper, or a missing scene between two episodes, or a piece of characterization that I feel needed to be added.

So, mostly to get some thoughts of my chest and fill the perceived holes in canon material. Which means my fics are rather short and not very popular, I guess. Hence, disabling hits/kudos. *g*

Mostly I do it 'cause i have ideas i want to put out there, or stuff in canon that i disagree with, or because the fandom/canon material is fun as hell and i want to participate.

I love comments and kudos, but they're not the be-all, end-all.

I write hard-core bdsm smut rpf with my bestie for our own personal entertainment, but it's not public.
