Not any more ridiculous than me having to buy an $80+ cable package to watch HBO? Maybe it's because I haven't had cable in a decade, but I'm totally fine paying ~$8/mo for a service that has content I definitely want. If you could cancel once they're not making any more episodes of your show, why not?

The problem for me is that it feels like there's a bunch of different web-only/subscription channels that are all trying to establish themselves at the same time, and it kind of adds up fairly quickly. It's an annoying model to have a shitload of different channels each trying to get me to watch 1 show that appeals to me, you know? It's a lot easier when it's more centralized a la Netflix/Hulu/Amazon.

This. Cable gets me a whole bunch of channels. These subscription things get me only limited stuff. Especially something like this that is a subscription for only one channel.

It's good that your cable gets you stuff you like.

For us, netflix + Hulu + the free network websites (e.g., S2 of Good Place on NBC) give us plenty of things to watch.

Yes, it's annoying that ST: Discovery and SG: Origins are behind paywalls, but we'll either watch at a friend's house or buy BD once the seasons are done.

Agreed. I have Netflix/Hulu/Amazon. I like their variety. I refuse to pay $8 (or whatever) a month for basically one show. I did do the trial of CBS' service, but it annoyed me as it still had commercials. You're going to make me pay for content I can mostly get on your network, and limited content as that considering it's just one network, and you're going to force me to watch commercials? No thanks. I've been debating giving up cable, as I don't watch much television anymore and most can be found on the streaming services I get, but even if I do that, I won't be paying for the individual networks.

I have Netflix/Hulu/Amazon and I have way more stuff to watch than I could ever get to. I don't have cable or even a TV. Occasionally I'll pay for something I want to see that's not on any of those services but it's usually something that's not on cable either.

Yeah, I rarely watch "real" television. I think my main things are The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert. But I'm constantly marathonibg shows on one of those three and never have enough time to watch it all.

There was a time when I thought buying channels a la carte would be the way to go, but that would only be cheaper if they cost only a couple bucks each a month, not $5-10. If I add up the cable channels I watch frequently, then multiply by $8, I would be paying more than I already do for cable.

I've been thinking about canceling my cable, but the point would be to watch less TV, not switch to TV on the internet.

Back when there were a couple streaming services who bought a variety of shows from different channels it was more economical to just have a streaming service. But now with channels starting their own streaming services instead of selling their programing the cost is just getting outrageous.

Plus the streaming services are getting more expensive just on their own.
