If you're not around Wi-Fi and want to be sure you're not using any data, you can set the phone to airplane mode. It'll turn off all location/GPS/messaging stuff too so nothing is using data in the background.

You can play most offline games on airplane mode, with the bonus of it not loading any ads (because it won't download the ads to show you! This is mainly why I use it even if I don't need to).

You can't get calls/texts while airplane mode is on though.

My phone has a way to turn off data without going into airplane mode. So I've done that. I can only call and text and play non-data using games.

Oh, good! You're covered then!

Streaming and downloads (of apps and ad-videos and associated) is the most data use for the majority of people, I think (Edit: though GPS and things that use location services like Google maps/directions can use a surprising amount too). Most people basically never install any apps if they're not on Wi-Fi.

How much data do you have/month?

I'm honestly not sure. I just know I used up all this month's data because I downloaded some Facebook game apps not realizing that was going to use it up. With my previous phone, it was cheep and the screen was bad, so I never used data. All I did was call and text. So I'm new to using data.
