When I was super young, I thought that only married people could kiss on the lips. And that if you did kiss on the lips, it was a legally binding thing and you were then married.

So I thought those old Hollywood kisses were the actors way of avoiding "marrying" each other.

Even later, when I knew that kisses didn't mean marriage, I always thought that they missed kissing lip-to-lip on purpose because the actors weren't really in love with each other and keeping real kissing to those they really loved (kind of like prostitutes who don't kiss on the mouth).
