I don't remember that thread (I don't really watch enough anime to have recommendations anyway) but like... I get where you're coming from. I don't even disagree. But I also hate it when I'm giving recommendations, and people don't try to give any useful information on what their preferences actually are or what they're looking for. It makes it really freaking hard to give recommendations, especially if I am trying to tailor them instead of just leaving long lists of crap.

Anyway, I'm glad you found something you like.

Castlevania!!!! I wonder if I recc'ed that one...I was watching it before and was sad it was over.

I hope you're enjoying it + the voices....mmm mmm mmm those voices ! And I really like the art.

Do you happen to have the link to the thread? I like to check out the recs when I have time.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-02 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, looks like you failed miserably, cause that one isn't an anime, it's an American cartoon. A very cool one, bun not anime.

It's probably close enough for OP's needs and there's no need to be rude about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-02 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
But they specifically asked for Japanese animation, I assume they wanted to watch stuff from Japan.

I think, when people who aren't into anime ask for recs, they're probably not going to care about the formal genre definition

(Anonymous) 2018-03-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
People who aren't anime geeks aren't necessarily purists about anime. OP seems content with their choice. Telling them they "failed miserably" is impolite and completely unnecessary. You don't give the impression that you're trying to help them out, you're giving the very strong impression that you responded just to sneer show off your superior knowledge.

It's okay, anon. I had the same thought.

Not that "Castlevania" is bad. I enjoyed it. But it's anime-style, not actual anime. If the OP wanted something truly Japanese which is along a similar vein as "Castlevania", I'd rec the "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" movie.

But OP will ignore that anyway, since I'm not writing a novel in defense of a movie that I enjoyed purely for visuals and loving the original '80's movie. :P

They did not specifically ask for 'japanese animation', they asked for anime, which can possibly include animation from other countries. It's not like we call it "japanime" anymore or anything.

I guess next time someone ask for manga recs I'll recommend them Scott Pilgrim, comics are comics. *facepalming hard*

Anime = Japanese animatiom.

IMO you should recommend people things that you think they'll like

Castlevania has amazing animation and a great beginning, but whoever their storyboarder and writer is needs to be fired. They had only a few episodes and it was still mostly filler with too many conversations that went nowhere or weren't concise enough.

I got the feeling that it was probably supposed to be a movie or something. I read an interview with Ellis and he said it was rewritten a bunch of times. I enjoyed it, but the pacing is definitely off.

I adore the Castlevania series. Of course, to be completely honest, I totally own my voice kink and Richard Armitage and James Callis both feed that quite nicely while watching.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-02 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know I had a thing for Armitage and Callis's voice until this series. Also helps that the characters they're voicing are oh so very enjoyable to watch.

AYRT

Armitage has a bunch of stuff on Audible he's narrated. It is possible that with the right material that I could honestly orgasm from just his voice. Frisson is my friend.

This is a fav and gives me shivers:
