Fandom is really, really strange. People have no problem at all with ABO AUs even though they sexualize current gender inequalities, nor with prostitution/sex slavery AUs... but if someone so much as mentions raceplay everyone freaks out. It's a.weird double standard, and I say this as someone who likes their porn nice and vanilla.

A lot of people have problems with both of those, but the rest of fandom says fuck those people. I guess it's harder to pretend that you're being deep by "exploring the sociopolitical underpinnings of the trope" when your kink is racism instead of sexism.

first of all, ABO doesn't intrinsically sexualize current gender inequalities IMO

second of all, people are deeply critical of both of those AUs

lol. look at you usin' a three-syllable word there.

alas it doesn't render your statement true.

Humhum. How about an ABO where the ABO-statuses were marked by color?

ABO's not my kink for that reason, but maybe people don't go after ABO because rarely it's one of the few times fandom is okay with Your Kink Is Not Mine (not to mention how damn widespread it is)? I guess if people want heats, mpreg, and D/s relationships in their stories, it's way stuck in fantasy land that it's pretty much harmless.

I do have a pet theory that ABO's gender inequality thing might be facilitated by the slash fandom in general's rare tendency to have strange hangups with gender, reproduction, and believing biotruths. Not everyone of course, because a lot of folks are just in it because two hot dudes getting together = hella hot, but I remember flipping through a lot of slash drama from folks that believed that women in stories were gross, annoying, hateworthy, etc., while male characters were Just Better For No Reason.

IDK where I'm going with this, other than listing my own musings I guess. I'm agreeing with you that while ABO could be seen as problematic in some way, I ultimately believe most mainstream people aren't into ABO so much as the social ramifications a strictly defined gendered world would have on social structure, so much as the knotting, heat kink, D/s etc. Eh. It's just mostly for getting off, honestly.

Fandom is really strange that way!

I am not especially interested in reading raceplay fic*, but it is super-striking that there is basically none of it in fandom. You can find other kinks, especially dub-con and non-con (or rapefic, if you will), some incest, age difference, and so on.

* If it were done thoughtfully and in a well-written manner in my particular fandoms and for my pairings, I would read it. But the cringe factor of reading non-kinkfic fucking up race is already bad enough.
