you know, not everything has to be about deep philosophical ponderings and ruminations. sometimes it's about the fun and yes, the escapism.

why must we be adults and stay adults to enjoy something?

because we are adults.

or at least, i am, and a good portion of the fandom is.

we spent enough time being children when we were, well, children. our society seems to be overflowing with childlike minds in adult bodies, incapable of individual thought and addicted to mass produced entertainment and products. my issue with fandom stems directly from my issue with society at large.

I mean this seriously: grow the fuck up. The older you get, the more you need the escapist parts of fandom, because real life is less and less fun when your body starts to go. Take my (born 1952) word for it. Deep philosophical considerations with no whipped cream and cherry atop are the sign of an immature mind and lack of real life experience.

i seriously don't mean this as offensively as it's inevitably going to come off, but i have to say it anyway: you're thirty years older than me and still unable to cope with the negative aspects of life?

i'm not going to act like my life has been fraught with unbearable hardships, but i truly think everyone who has grown past the 'ME ME ME' stage of childhood and adolescence should be able to deal with their lives, good and bad, without drowning their thoughts and time in meaningless fluff. maybe my view will change over the next three decades, but from where i'm standing now i can't fathom agreeing with you, nor do i think your viewpoint is universal among people of your age group.

I can cope fine; having fannish escape mechanisms are part of how I cope-as utterly lacking in utilitarian or philosophical significance as the roses I grow, and as satisfying.

If you don't need the bright and sweet and fluffy, well, good for you, Marcus Aurelius, but it's a matter of taste, not a matter of maturity, and until you see that small fact of life, well, you're stuck in the subadult wastelands, and lacking in both empathy and true deep understanding of the wild varieties of human experience.

i don't actually think people who indulge in escape mechanisms are somehow less than me, especially people who live in both worlds, so to speak - the people who indulge in mindless fantasy once in awhile and return to the real world refreshed. i also don't see growing roses as being analogous to drowning yourself in the more meaningless aspects of fandom - gardening requires the cultivation of a true skill, an active participation in a creative process.

in short, and to use your own metaphor, while i myself prefer bread and wine, i don't have as much of an issue with whipped cream and cherries in general as i do with people who eat whipped cream and cherries every day for every meal.

i understand that human experience is wonderfully diverse, but i don't believe that all views of the world are equal in their worth - and, like most people, i find mine to be the superior one.
