107. I know what you mean. I forgot some of my old fandoms for a few years. My sis sent me a funny vid on YouTube and I was like, OMG, I totally forgot I love this! Lol. The joy of rediscovery.

115. Can't it do both? Not to be rude, but I think a lot of SW fans, myself included, back away from acting like SW changed their life (at the risk of looking like a geek, or insane). Fandom should stay in fandom. It's just a movie. (And you forgot ROTJ. Yes, I am serious.)

125. When he almost put on the hat, I was actually excited: "We're getting a new Indy!" At the same time, I thought, What the heck is wrong with you?!

140. Mark Hamill as Joker FTW. I wasn't allowed to watch Batman. I would when no one was home - just for the crazy Joker laugh. He was the coolest. Sorry Heath (and Heath fans) but he doesn't cut it for me.

158. Foreman is my favorite, too. Agree and understand small!secret, cause I'm coming from the same place. Foreman = underrated.

#115 OP

oh, believe me, i don't go out into the real world and act like star wars changed my life. however, i don't have the attitude that 'it's just a movie' about any of the films i've grown to love. cinema, just like the theatre before it has become a vessel for our modern mythology, a new medium for a new generation of storytellers. i believe that a society's common stories are extremely important, as they shape the way we understand the world.

i think a huge part of my problem stems from the fact that i didn't exactly understand what fandom was before i got involved [i assumed that everyone involved in fandom was as interested in and as serious about modern storytelling as i am. i don't understand the desire to just kill your time immersing yourself in something that you find silly or otherwise mildly amusing. i also assumed that we would all be adults or mature teenagers having real conversations. discussing who the hottest jedi is and virtually worshipping george lucas =/= a real conversation for anyone over the age of 15, in my book].

i'm fond of rotj, but i don't think it's of the same caliber. don't get me wrong, they're all sort of b-movies, but i don't know - it never really touched me the way the other ones did. i think my biggest issue is that no one had to pay a price for their victory. if i made the movie, i would have killed off most of luke's friends and ended it BEFORE the ewok party, with luke burning vader's body on the pyre.

I'm kind of touchy about SW in real life. SW - I love it. LOVE IT. I can quote the movies by heart, I love almost all the characters, I have a shelf of the books, I have the stinkin action figures. And I love the underlying Big Issues that even children can understand. I get into big debates and discussions with my fellow SW geeks.

But I also remember what it is - a movie about spaceships flown by walking dogs. So I find it hard to take too seriously.

I do agree that fandom can be a letdown (i.e. it's ignorance and lack of willingness to tackle some heavier discussion.) But I don't think they should be faulted in that, either. I went into it like "SW IZ SRS BIZ!!!" and was really surprised. I found fandom much more fun when I didn't take everything so seriously, and just enjoyed myself.

ROTJ is pretty close to my favorite because of the bigger issues it tackles - the evil within, etc. And the films started out being for kids, so they finished the same way. I know it's not as good as the others, but I really don't mind the happy-happy ending. It's a fairy-tale. The heroes win. (And I think their sacrefices were shown in the first two films. Loosing homes, family, friends, livlihood. etc.) It was basically a wrapping up.
