I dunno. Some shows I've seen with extremely obvious male gaze fanservice have the most *interesting* female characters (Well, in Japanese media anyway, maybe elsewhere)

It's like they're dragging in a bread-and-butter audience with the fanservice to pay production costs and then go to town on developing the plots and personalities of the female characters who are already at the front of the stage.

I can live with a bit of fanservice not directed at me, if I get the plots and the personalities.
