“Purposely missing the point”

Oh like people being annoyed that OP stated it as an “SJW brownie points thing” and just maybe that “SJW thing” is instead just some tumblr users going “and happy lesbians because I want happy lesbians” and there might not be some political underline at all?

But nah better to just dismiss other people’s frustrations with the wording or implication of the secret instead of understanding WHY some people would be concentrating on that part.

You're purposely missing the point if you don't understand why the same happy lesbian story told over and over on tumblr by a million different people can get annoying and start to look like something other than happy lesbians written because the writer wanted happy lesbians. People write them because they know what sells on tumblr. Duh.

You apply this same logic to het and to male protagonists, right?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-12 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. But they are less annoying because only writers of lesbian couples are incredibly smug and believe their stories are superior to all the het ones of the exact same lazy cliche overdone quality.

Ah.

I mean, it kind of bothers me when people use my identity as a cute accessory for a soulless Tumblr post that was seemingly written primarily for brownie points. But of course the only reason you can dislike this sort of retelling becoming trendy is because you're an anti-SJW.

I think it's generally really hard to figure out why someone has written something the way that they have.

I agree that there's an element of soulless-cute-accessorizing to some of these stories, but I don't think it's the case across the board, and I'm really uncomfortable with that as a generalization.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Of course, but that doesn't mean that people who are bothered by certain portrayals of their identity should just keep their mouths shut, or that others should assume that the only reason to dislike these kinds of stories is because you're regressive or contrarian. I'd never advocate confronting someone personally for writing (what's apparently a) soulless-accessorizing story because you're absolutely right that there's no way to know their intentions, but that doesn't mean you can never discuss the trend ever.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-12 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. But I don't think that secret!OP approached it in a good or fair way, and I don't think that wanting to discuss the story is the only reason that people are getting a reactionary vibe from it.

Well to be fair it's a secret and not an essay. I assumed they were just venting, and that what they wrote in the secret wasn't meant to enlighten the world but just to get the thought off their chest. Maybe my reading of the secret is an overly charitable one, but I really feel like people are purposefully interpreting this one in the worst way possible.

It can be hard to tell, but if a story has nothing unique or interesting about it other than the subversion of having a lesbian ending, then it's pretty safe to say they don't actually care about telling a story, they just want the dopamine rush of getting a lot of notes.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-12 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's intrinsically an invalid or uninteresting reason to write a story
