I just didn't like how it glossed over or entirely left out a lot of the interesting scientific concepts in the world-building and made Calvin a useless tagalong.

Kind of? They say the word tesseract and mention it as something the Murry parents were working on, and at another spot the parents give a lecture where they say "what if you could travel a long distance in an instant," but I don't think they ever actually say that's what the tesseract is. And they completely skip over the "wrinkle in time" aspect of how it's actually supposed to work, so I think anyone who hadn't read the book would be left wondering what the movie title means.
