I've seen a couple fics so you are not the only one. Also, yeah I don't get why people think you should just magically know the character is supposedly 16 because of a blurb in an article.

Yeah, I was shocked when I saw someone say she was supposed to be a teenager.

I get that Hollywood casts adults to play teens but...there really was no hint that she was supposed to be THAT young.

Sure M'Baku is all, "you put a CHILD in charge of your science!" or whatever but I just took it to mean a young woman. And not like. A graybeard type.

I'm not going to tell you how to live your life but even setting aside the stuff you mention in the secret it doesn't seem like a particularly rich or interesting ship, you know. Like, what do you even really have going on there?

Also, with regards to the age thing and how the character is portrayed, Shuri did seem to be portrayed as pretty young. I wouldn't have necessarily guessed 16 but it sounds about right with the way that the character was written and acted, I guess.

Not op or ayrt: To me making things rich and interesting when they don't look like it in canon is part of what fanfic is about, or can be about. And I can't lie, this ship occurred to me too. But I don't like his character enough to want to write it.

Personally I'd sooner ship Shuri with certain characters she hasn't yet interacted with. Or maybe even Bucky.

I just thought their interactions were cute, it's really not deeper than that. Which I will admit is very unusual for me (my ships tend to be intense and questionably codependent). I guess sometimes you just want the simple, cute things.

I guessed she was supposed to be early 20s based on the actress and based on the age of her parents and T'Challa. 16 is certainly in the realm of possibility, but it still made me double take when people started mentioning it!

Even the few interactions they had were entertaining. He's a seasoned CIA man with no special powers but a strong will to do the right thing; she's from a far more technologically advanced society and is probably smarter than him despite his experience. I love intelligence vs wisdom pairings. He could learn a lot from her but she's also energetic and a bit impulsive and could use someone like him to help her stay realistic even while she busts his balls. "Another broken white man for me to fix," come on...

But yeah, the age thing shocked me too. She was obviously young, but I'd have guessed early 20s, not a teenager. It would make more sense, because otherwise there's this huge gap between her and T'Challa and most siblings have maybe a few years between them, especially if it's just the two of them.

Then again, there seems to be a fair amount of shipping Ross with pretty much everyone in the movie.

I did kind of think that M'Baku's line about Shuri being a child was supposed to point out how young she was. And I at least got the impression before that that she was a teenager (I feel that was mentioned somewhere in the movie, but that may just have been something I heard or read before the movie).

Anyway, I'm shipping Erik and T'Challa and one is dead, they are literally mortal enemies, and they are cousins, to boot. So, whatever.

I'm shocked how prevalent Ross is in the fic!

I saw the movie twice and I'm 99% sure the only in-movie indication of her age is M'Baku's line about "a child" being in charge of Wakandan science. Which flew past my head the first time I saw it and I brushed off as M'Baku being dismissive the second time.

I've been around fanfic for too long to really care, so I'm with you and "whatever" is a good response.

Uh. . . . Letitia Wright is 24. She is a grown ass woman, so it doesn’t really matter that the character she is playing is “definitely coded as a teenager,” people are going to mistake the actor’s age for the character’s age. This has come up in other FS posts for plenty of white actors, too.

That said, I came out shipping T'Challa/Erik and I'm sure tumblr is already up in arms about it (even though Thorki gets away with incest just fine, suspiciously enough. And yes, it is incest, blood related or not, Westermarck effect and all that). So, in the same problematic ship boat.

If she's 16, how old is T'Challa? Letitia Wright is no old lady but she does not look 16 and, honestly, looks a touch older than her actual age. Her black isn't cracking but she's no baby.

I do think there's too much of an age gap for a Shuri/Ross ship but I don't know that I can resist Shuri/Bucky. I call them Shucky!

Anyone who comes screaming with the MAP/Pedo complaints about either ship can fuck off. Let people have their fun.
