Donald Trump running for President. I thought it'd be a good laugh, never knowing the horror we'd be in for.

I don't mean to be rude but it's hard to find a polite way to say this

That was never a reasonable or justifiable belief to hold, and you should strongly reconsider the processes and attitudes that led you to hold it

nayrt but to be fair, lots of people didn't think he had a chance of winning, so they thought he'd run and faceplant even harder and more hilariously than McCain/Palin.

I didn't say I voted for him (I knew what a disaster that would be), I just thought he had no chance at all and it'd be an amusing short term thing when he first ran.

Oh, it's plenty amusing when you're far, far away from the crazy.

It sucks donkey balls for anyone within a 40,000 mile radius of it.

Idk I remember when he first announced thinking "Lol, he'll drop out in a week." It was a pretty common reaction.

Get real. Very few people outside of his base thought he had a chance in hell before the Republican primaries.

But there wasn't any actual compelling reason to think that he wasn't a serious candidate. He was consistently leading in the polls for a long time. People just refused to seriously consider the possible that he could win the primaries. It was an incorrect mode of thinking at the time. There were arguments that he might not win, but they were exaggerated into the belief that he didn't have a chance, and this was an error. It's not just a hindsight thing. It was an incorrect mode of thinking and analysis even at the time, driven by errors in thinking and assumptions that have to be conquered and destroyed.

And it had an impact - it wasn't inevitable that Trump would win the nomination, and it's certainly possible that, had the other Republican candidates in the field taken him seriously, he wouldn't have done.

There's a lol factor, but it's a cruel one, and frankly comes for a place of ultra privilege. This was never a joke, from the moment he became a serious candidate.

Have we forgotten that not a hell of a lot of people DIDN'T THINK he was a serious candidate at first?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
That was an incorrect belief

Hindsight is 20/20.

At the time he announced his candidacy, it was the buffoon from The Apprentice with the dead tribble on his head running for a country's highest office. Incorrect or not, almost no one believed he ever had a serious shot for most of the campaign. It looked like a ridiculous publicity stunt.

Yeah which is why its in this thread, obviously.
