Fic Genres

What are your favorite genres, what do you want to see more of, and why do you like it? Be as hyperspecific as possible.

Hurt/Comfort is my all time favorite. Gen or Shippy, Mental or Physical, Short or Long, idgaf. Just give me that hurt/comfort. I especially like it when it is a tough guy who is trying to hide he is hurting because he "has to be strong".

It's a new one for me, I used to like hurt/comfort and shippy snippets best, but now I'm craving case fics, one-shots that'd read like an episode, plotty, mostly gen, maybe with just a bit of ship tease?

I love those!

"Oh dear. There is only one hotel room left in town and it only has one bed. Fortunately, this fits in perfectly with how we are going undercover as a couple for plot reasons."

Time travel fix-it fic. Something shit happens in canon? Send one or more of the characters back in time so they can change it.

Hell yeah, this is my top fanfic genre for life. There are some terrible ones out there, but there's also so many creative, fun ones out there that I never get tired of them.

Yes!

Definitely! I love these fics.

Oh man, I love this one too! I read a really good one back in the day that saved Nephrite in Sailor Moon because Chibiusa messed up the timeline with her time key.

Fix-its that don't wipe out canon, but adjust it subtly to make things *better*/more interesting/happier.

Crossovers where the author is really excited about the two 'verses mixing, *not* where the author just wants to dump on a character/fandom they don't like and/or make one fandom 'so much better' at the job the other fandom is known for.

Post-apocalyptic AUs with some inspired, thoughtful worldbuilding.

In Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!!

The first one is so great if done right. I read an amazing one like it for my favourite old YA book series and .... aaah, so fulfilling!

Yes! Especially when canon got stupid because the writers went the 'dumb' route to support a plot (or series arc) that was just...bad.

Hurt/comfort, I guess, generally. But most specifically, very long, slow burn, low-stakes, often somewhat domestic emotional-comfort fics where two characters take a very long time to recover from physical and emotional issues with each other's help, and also to get together and make out and stuff.

If you can also get a very light touch of supernatural / ghost story type weirdness in there, then it's just absolutely perfect. That's the ideal.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurt/comfort where the "weaker" character goes all BAMF to rescue the stronger one. Add in some pining and contrived circumstances like huddling for warmth in the one bed available or having to get one character naked to tend their wounds and you've got a fic I'm guaranteed to love.

Hurt/comfort porn. As in porn where one or more characters is just loved on and taken care of and adored.
Just PWPs in general and hurt/comfort in general (especially ones with a lot of hurt).
Darkfic that does a great job with character exploration
AUs that change one small thing and then see how things might be different if that thing happened
character exploration fics

I love the first one. It's so cute.

Re: Fic Genres

(Anonymous) 2018-03-19 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, fluff.

Also: well-executed AUs that take the AU premise seriously and aren't generic.

This was a panel at Aseliacon this weekend, I wonder if you were present, lol! My favorite is hurt-comfort I think, but I really like my stories to have an over-arching epic plot to them, and the hurt-comfort just be a result of the plot getting intense. Makes it hard to find fic I really want to read.
