120 - REALLY SORRY FOR THE TL;DR

[identity profile] cookie-simone.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I hate to go off topic, but as a huge Mylar and Mohinder fan, I had to respond. Could you please explain to me why Mohinder is so "dumb"? I really don't understand why the majority of fandom seems to think so. Is it because he didn't figure out that Sylar was pretending to be Zane right away? If anything, I give him credit for figuring it out in only three days - possibly even less. He had no reason to suspect Zane. Sure, he was a little weird, but any normal person would just assume that he's simply a bit shy and eccentric. He had no reason to believe he was Sylar, either - for all he knew, Sylar was still being held by the company - It would've been strange for him to jump to that conclusion that quickly.

Another thing that I have to give him credit for is that once he found out, instead of running away like most people would, he managed to stay cool, keep his heart rate down so that Sylar would not be able to tell that something's wrong (I don't know how he did that), and calmly maneuver Sylar into his trap. His pride and desire for vengeance ended up getting the best of him in the end, but that still doesn't change the fact that he's the one person who's come the closest to killing Sylar (well, before Hiro stabbed him, anyway), and he did it all by himself - even though he has NO powers - I think that's very admirable.

As for his decisions in S2, I don't see what was so wrong about them either. I feel like the majority of fandom just hates him because they love HRG so much. I love him, too - but the man isn't Jesus - he is wrong sometimes. And for that matter, I don't see why someone has to be "wrong", they both simply have different priorities, and both are understandable. Bennet's first priority is to protect his family, Mohinder's is to look out for the greater good. Aligning himself with the company made much more sense at the time: he needed them to provide him with the resources to stop the virus. And what's more important? Trying to help stop a virus that could potentially end up killing 93% of the population, or helping Bennet "take down the company"? Not to mention that the last time that they spoke before Mohinder decided to come clean to Bob, Bennet practically told him that he's expendable. AND he failed to mention that he had just killed that "old friend" who "helped him" find those paintings. IMO, Mohinder would've been stupid to trust Bennet after that. If anything, Mohinder is just impulsive. He should've tried to take the time to discuss things with Bennet first, but being impulsive doesn't make you stupid.

I could go on and on about other things that fans complained about - like him taking Molly to the company (which turned out great!), or refusing to inject Monica with the virus (which also turned out well!) - but this comment is already WAY past tl;dr. I'm sorry about that... I have a tendency of writing long monologues, which I guess is fitting coming from a Mohinder fan. Thanks for taking the time to read this! That is, if you actually took the time to read this. I'm gonna... go now.

The reason I think Mohinder is kind of an idiot has to do with the amount of time I spend every episode shouting "No! Don't DO that!" at the TV screen.

Yes, some things that he has done that logically were idiotic have turned out well for him, but I always have the feeling that's because he's got authorial handwavium on his side. Not because it was actually smart to take Molly to the company. Or to infiltrate the company in the first place. Refusing to inject Monica was not stupid. That was moral. I actually like it when Mo has ethics.

I don't like the second season generally, but basically I thought Mohinder never did display a good grasp of Earth Logic, and, like most characters on the show, survived because Kring wanted him to.

Don't get me wrong. I do like Mo. But he's definitely someone who's still breathing on account of serendipity rather than analytical thinking.

I can see your point, but it's like you said: this could be applied to most of the characters on this show. Many of them have gotten into impossible life and death situations and survived because they're the main characters and Kring doesn't want them dead. I don't think that's always the case with Mohinder, though. After all, he did manage to trick Sylar twice. I already mentioned Parasite, but I also LOVED it when he got Sylar to come with him to Isaac's loft (where he knew Bob had placed some hidden cameras - because he likes to watch Momo on his free time, the perve), and then managed to drag things out as long as he did. I think he does rather well for a simple geneticist.

As for the Molly thing... I honestly don't know what else he could've done. A regular hospital would not have been equipped to deal with a supernatural coma - it may have been risky, but I think his decision was understandable. Besides, if the company had wanted to take her, they could've done that anyway. They already knew that she was staying with Mohinder.

I agree about their plan to take down the company, though. That may sound cool, but it was kinda idiotic. They're only two people - three, with the Haitian - how exactly did they expect to take down a huge organization like that? This - again - is an example of Mohinder's impulsiveness. He's too good for his own good. He always ends up getting himself into trouble because of his altruism, but I gotta say... I kinda love that about him. He's willing to risk his own life for the greater good, he's so brave! *squishes Momo*

Edited because I accidentally pasted something that I edited to the beginning. LOLZ.
