How is she "male gaze"?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the show so I really genuinely can't say. But the outfit is pretty sexualized, and the promos I've seen certainly don't seem like they're going out of their way to avoid objectifying her, so I'm just curious where you're coming from, as someone who presumably watches the show, that she wouldn't be an example of male gaze.

I mean, male gaze doesn't subsume every aspect of a character - you can have well-written, good characters who are also at the same time depicted in gaze-y ways.

NCIS Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well she's leaving at the end of the season, so maybe you can give it a chance next year (provided it's renewed for next year)

Really?! I can watch NCIS?! Yay! I love me some police procedurals and Mark Harmon, but I can't stand her.

I got the impression that Pauley is basically playing herself (she is/was a forensic scientist before getting the part).

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is true? Her wikipedia says she attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, but she'd been working both in various odd jobs and as an actress before NCIS.

Just go with it's a boring typical CBS crime procedural as the reason you avoid it and leave it at that.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't watch it on the regular (my parents do, so I watch it if it's on while I'm over at their place), but I never really got the impression she was made as male-gazey or even fan service? Like... she just comes across as the quirky forensic scientist to me.

Though I love her interactions with whatshisface, the older guy. Gibbs?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak to recent seasons (I only watched syndicated reruns of early seasons on USA and the like) but...for a large chunk of the series run there is absolutely zero fanservice and no, she's not portrayed as sexy. Her schtick is "quirky." She was supposed to be basically odd man out among a bunch of suits.

Alright.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess there were elements of that early on, but the reason they put her in a lot of promos is more because the character is popular. Honestly, they hit the goth much harder than the sexy. She is much more slotted into little sister/surrogate daughter - and occasionally falls into a sort of petulant or spoiled little girl persona because of that. But what they hit most of all in the show is that she's really excellent at her job. Anyway, the actress will be 50 next year, so though the character is still excitable, she's mellowed a bit from the first few seasons. She does wear short skirts and platforms and dog collars, but she also sometimes wears coveralls.

yeah, no. Abby isn't portrayed that way. She's more sisterly and fucking brilliant at her job, and also very granola (bleeding heart, anti-fur). She's also a New Orleans girl and her Goth is much more Cajun than emo-inspired. She's an awesome character. And yes, she's gorgeous but she's not male-gazey except insomuch as any beautiful woman is.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
all of this.

What depraved and degenerate times do we live in, that goth can be called "emo-inspired" ;)

Yeah, there is like zero fanservice going on with her. She dresses goth and that's about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-22 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. I kind of love Abby.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-22 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
What part of Cajun culture is a grown woman wearing pigtails, a pleated mini skirt and platform boots?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
She's so fucking Wal-Mart goth.

I, too, have trouble looking sexy and goth, but that's because I find looking goth to be way, way too much work.

frankly, I think she's the only interesting character on the show.

(stymied? that's an expression my grandmother would use. and she's been dead for forty years.)

(Anonymous) 2018-03-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this will help, but to give a comparison, Abby is treated like Penelope Garcia in "Criminal Minds". Yes, she is sexy, but it's in the "she's just a gorgeous human being" way. The "worst" male-gaze-y moment is a split-second shot in one of the season openers of her full-back tattoo.

I'd say 95% of the time, Abby is as the others have said, more like the super-brainy-kid-sister/surrogate daughter of the team. I mean, some of her trademarks include her love of caffeinated sugar water, bowling with nuns, and her farting stuffed hippo Bert.

I'm really going to miss her after this season. :(

I won't watch this show because I'm not going to watch a grown adult woman with pigtails

The show's not like that at all.

Or it wasn't when I watched it. Cote de Pablo as Ziva was the sexy one, if any of the women were. Abby was the eccentric nerd girl, not the "sexy goth."

Yeah, she is totally more of a geeky little sister than a sexy goth. I can't think of a single ep where they focused on her being sexy - they do have some where she attracts male attention, but its generally because she is smart and geeky, not because she is sexy. Her personality outshines the goth. And a lot of the time, she is covered by a lab coat or a pair of coveralls so you don't even see a lot of the goth outfit.

i used to watch this show and like her character but i don't think i could anymore after pauley threw so much shade at cote for leaving the show because she wanted to be paid the same amount as her co-stars (i'm talking pauley herself, michael weatherly, and the guy who plays mcgee, not mark harmon).
