~noncon land~ tends to have some of the most robust and considerate tagging cultures around, so no, one should not automatically expect that you could come across anything, unwarned for

That said, OP, the author might very well have considered it just "violence" and not thought of mutilation as a particular thing; if they're trying to be conscientious and over-warning for even implications of rape, they might actually appreciate a heads-up that this is something they should have a tag for.

Does it? When I read noncon, I ignore tags, and when I post it, I choose not to warn.

It just seems like an odd category for squeamish people to explore.

NAYRT in my experience, people who write darker stuff tend to be aware of the fact that not everyone wants to see what they write so they tag it and are quick to point out if other people should tag. And if you like one thing (i.e. noncon) that doesn't mean you're okay with other things (like having tongues cut out), it doesn't make you squeamish to want tags so you know what you're getting into.

It's not about being "squeamish." A lot of people are into noncon stuff because fiction can be a safe, in-control way to engage with really thorny consent issues and consent-related baggage. And responsible tagging practices helps make it so.

I'm glad you don't feel the need to read warnings yourself - I usually don't either - and "choose not to warn" is very explicitly a "proceed at your own risk" space. There might be particular pockets of noncon fans/fandom that aren't as into careful tagging, but the very *best* and most thoughtful tagging cultures I've ever encountered have absolutely been dark kink/noncon heavy spaces. And if secret OP is used to that, I'm not surprised they were taken aback.

It's kind of odd to me how the "no spoilers!!11" culture in general fannish spaces co-exists with "tag everything/warn for everything!!11" culture.

Personally, I can enjoy a book or movie or tv show after reading the summary, including all the plot twists, so I don't mind spoilers. I also don't suffer from PTSD, so I don't generally need warnings. I'm just surprised that these two are not mutually exclusive.

I mean, I might expect some blood (tho blood is something I actually don't want in my non-con porn...) but body parts getting cut off? Nope. That falls under guro, which is not my kink at all.

I mean, just because rape and extreme violence might be kink neighbours, it doesn't mean people need to expect them when they're not tagged. I assume for example that people into watersports (also not my kink) are automatically prepared for scat (soooooooo not my kink).

No, I think incomplete warnings are weird and abnormal. If there were no warnings at all then I'd treat it as a read at your own risk experience, but if someone goes out of their way to write a list of warnings I would find it very odd if the list was incomplete and would be bothered if one of the warnings that got left off was my trigger.

I agree, and that seems like common sense. I'd say mutilation, though, might go a little far. I'd expect an "extreme violence/torture" tag or something.
