I think it's more that people get upset that these 'imagines' often get more attention than actual fanfics.

And people who post these as actual fics on AO3 are just assholes.

When someone gets more attention for the same idea that someone else took the time to write an actual fic for, why not? Jealousy isn't terribly embarrassing all the time.
