I like them, too. I've always enjoyed idea bouncing and the spontaneous fic-like stuff that results.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
mostly agree

(Anonymous) 2018-03-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
like, idk about on tumblr but there's an awful lot of thse posted at AO3 as actual fics. therein lies the problem.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-23 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah but if thats the case you'd think people would say "stop posting your imagine blurbs as fic"

and not "imagine blurbs suck and are lazy and the devil" while clearly referencing a post on tumblr and not AO3

I don't feel any particular way about them tbh. They're just a thing I see sometimes in tags and I scroll on by.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh... I actually probably would "like" them better (I don't hate them, I just dislike them clogging up lots of fandom tags by tagging lots of ships) if they were labeled plotbunnies (it's also a very cute word, which helps)?

It's not that there's anything wrong with throwing out ideas, especially if you'd love for someone else to write it or you just know you'll never write it yourself but honestly yes, I'd still sometimes hate them, because they would still be a way to get the same level of back pats as writing an actual story by doing none of the really challenging parts of writing, often being congratulated for a novel idea that an actual writer also had but didn't condense quickly into a shittily written post.

There's also the fact that a huge proportion of "imagine" prompts are self-insert ones you can't avoid, and sorry to those who like them but they make me cringe.

Yeah, the only imagines I see are self-inserts, not what this secret is referring to, which seems like plotbunnies to me.

Maybe it's different across fandoms?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
So the problem isn't the imagines, the problem is how much of an egoboost people get for writing them?

Kinda. I realize it's petty and crotchety, but it's a reminder of how a lot of the stuff that is more visual or friendly to the short form of tumblr is what fandom just is for some people now, so that's the kind of effort that gets rewarded.

... or speculation, or even "meta."

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1

It would still annoy me when they clogged up fandom tags, but I'd much rather they be treated as meta/speculation/plot bunnies than as a fully-fledged fanwork that I'm supposed to treat as seriously as fic while not holding it to the same standards I'd hold fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Who says you're "supposed to" do that?

Maybe.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care one way or the other unless they are posted as actual fic on AO3, which I don't really think they should be, but they are easy enough to scroll past.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I neither like them nor hate them. The cutesy bores me so I flip by them.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
As someone mentioned above, it's the self-insert aspect that makes them cringy to me. I don't mind story ideas or plot bunnies, but I've never seen an "imagine" post that wasn't a self-insert fantasy. That kind of seems to be the point of them. "Imagine Tony Stark was your dad, and you had a bad day at school.....". "Imagine if Loki walked into your room one day...."

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It feels like they shouldn't be called "Imagine"; they should be called "Imagine You...". The self-insert of it feels cringey and gross. The you/reader-insert of it feels even worse. Especially when you get into the ones that are sexual in nature, like "Imagine Negan wanting you and you calling him 'Daddy'." There's something just gross.

Okay, here's the best way I can explain it. Did you see "Prinal Fear" with Edward Norton and Richard Gere? When Edward Norton's character is being directed by the archbishop to participate in the porn with the two other kids? That's what the Imagines feel like to me. Sure, plenty of them aren't sexual, but so very many of them are.

So yeah, you'll never convince me that Imagines aren't an instant back button.

And yes, keep in mind, that's only how I feel. I'm guessing that's not anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
... and turned you into a frog hunting spider that mildly amused him until he lost interest and left your room. Because that wasn't where he was trying to go to begin with."

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I would honestly get over my own aversion to imagines if I read more like this and less of the ones that are basically "for some reason you, mediocre human female are the ONE he wants to bang for 10 days straight" - cos this is the dude who has been utterly delightful to humans in canon, especially women!

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I’ve maybe seen one of these that was a self-insert. Maybe I just hang out in the wrong (or right, I guess) fandoms or corners of fandoms to avoid the self-insert sort?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more that people get upset that these 'imagines' often get more attention than actual fanfics.

And people who post these as actual fics on AO3 are just assholes.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So people are just jealous of the attention?

I don't have an issue with them, I just think they need some other name because 'imagines' is a terrible name.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly I hate when people on Tumblr don't put them under a cut/read more, so I can scroll past them easier.

All of the Imagines I've seen are self-insert, and the whole Y/N thing in place of a name is ridiculous. Every time I see it (because I can't scroll fast enough past something not under a cut), I think "Yes/No" what?

If I want to read a self-insert ficlet, I'd write it myself so I can do the thing I want to read about with the character instead of trying to force myself into someone else's fantasy.
