As someone mentioned above, it's the self-insert aspect that makes them cringy to me. I don't mind story ideas or plot bunnies, but I've never seen an "imagine" post that wasn't a self-insert fantasy. That kind of seems to be the point of them. "Imagine Tony Stark was your dad, and you had a bad day at school.....". "Imagine if Loki walked into your room one day...."

Exactly. It feels like they shouldn't be called "Imagine"; they should be called "Imagine You...". The self-insert of it feels cringey and gross. The you/reader-insert of it feels even worse. Especially when you get into the ones that are sexual in nature, like "Imagine Negan wanting you and you calling him 'Daddy'." There's something just gross.

Okay, here's the best way I can explain it. Did you see "Prinal Fear" with Edward Norton and Richard Gere? When Edward Norton's character is being directed by the archbishop to participate in the porn with the two other kids? That's what the Imagines feel like to me. Sure, plenty of them aren't sexual, but so very many of them are.

So yeah, you'll never convince me that Imagines aren't an instant back button.

And yes, keep in mind, that's only how I feel. I'm guessing that's not anyone else.

... and turned you into a frog hunting spider that mildly amused him until he lost interest and left your room. Because that wasn't where he was trying to go to begin with."

I would honestly get over my own aversion to imagines if I read more like this and less of the ones that are basically "for some reason you, mediocre human female are the ONE he wants to bang for 10 days straight" - cos this is the dude who has been utterly delightful to humans in canon, especially women!

Huh, I’ve maybe seen one of these that was a self-insert. Maybe I just hang out in the wrong (or right, I guess) fandoms or corners of fandoms to avoid the self-insert sort?
