Martin Freeman sounds like an asshole, tbh. It's one thing to tell people who directly harass them to fuck off. But he doesn't get to tell fans what to think and who to ship.

Yeah, pretentious asshole indeed. Boohoo: people are too engaged in stuff he has made for the single purpose of engaging people, what a tragedy for him.

I mean...people were sending death threats to his wife.

This, man. People were claiming they were in love and in a super!sekrit! relationship! but were suppressed and forced by ~The Powers That Be~ to pretend to be straight and get married to women because homophobia, they sent his wife death threats and called her every name in the book claiming she was a beard. I certainly understand why he's the way he is about it.

Yeah, doesn't he know that being in a popular show means the fans of that show own him? He's legally and morally obligated to blithely accept whatever they say and encourage them in their delusions, no matter how many death threats his loved ones receive from bitter little fangirls who won't be happy until he and Cumberbatch fuck on live television.

It's also one thing to ship a pairing, but another thing to declare that a pairing is Secretly Canon and harass anyone who gets in the way of that declaration -- including actors and creators, fellow fans, and people on completely unrelated shows that they've decided must be Part Of The Conspiracy.

Sounds to me like Freeman is rejecting the latter. Which is perfectly reasonable, given the particular history of Sherlock fandom.

Based on this snippet alone (I don't know what this quote is from)... maybe he's had too much of people telling him how he must have been playing his character or repeatedly asking him about it. It doesn't come across as very tactful but he sounds fed up. It seems to me he has been less bothered by the shipping in the past.

Martin Freeman is a pretentious asshole, you're right about that, but I don't think this is necessarily the worst instance

The whole point of slash is that it's non-canonical. You're creating a derivative and alternative work based on the source material.

Creators have absolutely no obligation to indulge bugfuck crazy fans who believe that the hundreds of hours of labor invested in an original work is really m/m romance, nor are they obligated to be civil when repeatedly confronted with bugfuck crazy fans who think that slash headcanons imply something about the creator's personal family life.
