I feel you. That was a nail-in-the-coffin comment.

But! Delusional people don't care about reality so I doubt they'll pay any heed at all. Not that it matters since there's never going to be any more BBC Sherlock, RIP.

They've stopped?

Or you just don't expect Series (Six?) within your lifetime?

Martin Freeman looks unwell in that pic. Is that intentional, or has he just gone that far downhill in the past couple of years?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
nah, it's just Gay Panic.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone looked like shit in Season 4.

Shippers are one thing, but the people who harrass and/or threaten the IRL spouses, children, and families of actors for whatever reason are something else entirely.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never thought they had or that the show would go in that direction, but wouldn't it be perfect if Butternut Crinklefries went and stated that he has, all along and Freeman has been kept in the dark on purpose. (There are RL examples of this strategy and it is sooo yummy I have not words.)

Lmao actually there IS such a thing as crinkle cut butternut squash fries

This just makes me laugh because I really really don't care for Sherlock so I'm not bothered about any more episodes - no offence intended to anyone who enjoys it but I think it's overrated and can't be arsed with it. I know nothing of its shippers and their levels of intensity regarding thoughts on RPF for this pairing, but in my opinion this quote screams loudly "doth protest too much" and, if anything, supports the opinion that they could be a couple as much as it opposes it. This is hilarious to me because it makes me sound such a tinhat but I'm honestly not - I really couldn't give a flying fuck about either of them.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I believe the actor is a foul-mouthed bugger anyway. This isn't particularly hyperbolic language for him.

More than any fandom, JohnLock has this escalation/obsession effect going on where there are fans shouting "conspiracy! conspiracy! there's a secret S4 hidden fourth episode that makes JohnLock real!" and these people are seriously deluded and approach the actors at cons with their theories of how JohnLock Is Real and are disturbingly avid about it.

So on one hand I sympathize with him. OTOH, he's a total asshole and possibly a homophobe? On the third, alien, hand, all I know of this fandom has been peripheral, as I am not in it. I just watched the eps and read about the fandom on FS.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. My guess is that it only sounds like an overreaction if you unaware of the context, i.e. lots and lots of batshit Johnlock fans who've beaten the subject to death for years.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2018-03-25 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
It makes it funnier within context of Holmes in general - people shipped him and Watson for over 100 years so any adaptation would receive same questions.

However, I do wonder if Freeman might have had this reaction due to Cumberbatch being a total prat. I would not wish dating him on worst enemy.

Incorrect

That fandom was a bag of angry cats, but nah, he's an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Martin Freeman sounds like an asshole, tbh. It's one thing to tell people who directly harass them to fuck off. But he doesn't get to tell fans what to think and who to ship.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretentious asshole indeed. Boohoo: people are too engaged in stuff he has made for the single purpose of engaging people, what a tragedy for him.

It's also one thing to ship a pairing, but another thing to declare that a pairing is Secretly Canon and harass anyone who gets in the way of that declaration -- including actors and creators, fellow fans, and people on completely unrelated shows that they've decided must be Part Of The Conspiracy.

Sounds to me like Freeman is rejecting the latter. Which is perfectly reasonable, given the particular history of Sherlock fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Based on this snippet alone (I don't know what this quote is from)... maybe he's had too much of people telling him how he must have been playing his character or repeatedly asking him about it. It doesn't come across as very tactful but he sounds fed up. It seems to me he has been less bothered by the shipping in the past.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Martin Freeman is a pretentious asshole, you're right about that, but I don't think this is necessarily the worst instance

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-03-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The whole point of slash is that it's non-canonical. You're creating a derivative and alternative work based on the source material.

Creators have absolutely no obligation to indulge bugfuck crazy fans who believe that the hundreds of hours of labor invested in an original work is really m/m romance, nor are they obligated to be civil when repeatedly confronted with bugfuck crazy fans who think that slash headcanons imply something about the creator's personal family life.

It's weird how the promotional photography for this show has gotten less flattering as time has gone on. I can't entirely chalk that up to the actors aging.

The creators of Sherlock deliberately involved online fandom in their show (The first ep of season 3, anyone? Where they're going through 'fan' possibilities as to how Sherlock survived, including a Moriarty/Sherlock 'kiss'?) so, in a way, they've brought this on themselves. Of course fans are going to think they may have an influence on how the show goes, if their theories etc are being referenced. Particularly as the show also does queer bait. So yes, this from Martin Freeman kind of makes him out to be an asshole. Let shippers ship, I say and don't worry about it.
I'm solely referring to Johnlock. In terms of RPF I don't mind it, as long as fans keep it in the 'fictional' and don't harass the actors about it. If Martin is being actively harassed by fans in regards to his relationship with Benedict, then fair enough to be angry. (Funnily enough, I don't get the impression they are that close anyway, IRL. Hell, if peeps want to RPF ship- they could always go for Benedict and Tom Hiddleston- who really are close friends.)

Bollocks
