Why is this a secret?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing:

* because there are people sick of Trump and politics in general
* there are people who don't like seeing one of the few public, famous transwomen criticized
* there are people who will object to the idea that anyone should maybe sit down and learn to self censor because free speech

I'll never get that. Why can't we criticize her? If we say we can't criticize any trans people (or black people or women or gays or whatever), then isn't that also a form of prejudice? I'm not criticizing her for being a woman. I'm criticizing the views she holds that I disagree with. Not the same thing.

DA

I couldn't agree more. Just because someone belongs into a marginalized group, doesn't mean they can't be a shitty human being too.

Gender dysphoria isn't a choice, nor does it hurt anyone. So there's no blame there. Voting and supporting someone for president is a choice. It's the way she acts surprised when said hate mongerer acts exactly as he promised in his presidental campaign that really grates my cheese.

I genuinely don't know what she expected. Trump appointed arch-homophobe Mike Pence as his VP, among other things that should have made it clear he's no ally.

She probably felt protected in the sense that she's rich and famous and Trump is rich and famous, too. Or maybe she thought that wealth would win out over the Republicans' personal prejudices. It often has before. But she may not have realized that the people who voted for Trump/Pence aren't like Republican voters in the past - they're sincere in their bigotry and hatred. Trump's campaign knew that, you can bet.

She's been very privileged her entire life and she thought being rich and white would trump being trans when it came to being on the "right people" list. Being lumped in with the rest of the unwanted must be very upsetting to her.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. She probably felt like she and Trump were on the same level but failed to realize two things: 1) Trump didn't feel the same and 2) not every transgender person has the privileges and protections she enjoys because of her wealth, fame and race.

I also think that it really hasn't hit home for her how being a rich, white woman is not the same as being a rich, white man. And she will continue to keep getting upset as she learns what those who were born cisgender female have had to deal with their entire lives.

I think this is the case for a lot of trans women who transition late in life, at least at the start. They are so used to being in the male privilege bubble, even if they are also suffering because they are not actually men, that it is a real shock to find out how extremely bad misogyny and transphobia really is for everyone else. Some people listen and learn, some people remain assholes.

She comes off as an extremely selfish person, both with this comment and with her views on gay marriage.

That's the impression I got too. I'm not even sure she's completely for trans rights beyond how they affect her personally.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's not what she can do for the trans community, but what the trans community can do for her. As long as she'll get her rights, she won't care for the rest.

I try to stay out of American politics. I think Trump is just absolutely fucking ridiculous and I can barely stand to look at his face for five seconds. I don't really know much about her and I'm certainly not a fan but I don't know how ANYONE can support this world going backwards in such a way as this. Let's all have black people stand up on the bus again. That'd be cool, right? No - it'd be fucking awful. It's putting the Western world back into the stone age. I hope Trump's wife turns out to be secretly transgender and I would laugh myself to death.

Rich Old White Men like to fuck over minorities even ones that pay money to have their dick turned inside out. Other news at 11, water is wet.
