I genuinely don't know what she expected. Trump appointed arch-homophobe Mike Pence as his VP, among other things that should have made it clear he's no ally.

She probably felt protected in the sense that she's rich and famous and Trump is rich and famous, too. Or maybe she thought that wealth would win out over the Republicans' personal prejudices. It often has before. But she may not have realized that the people who voted for Trump/Pence aren't like Republican voters in the past - they're sincere in their bigotry and hatred. Trump's campaign knew that, you can bet.

She's been very privileged her entire life and she thought being rich and white would trump being trans when it came to being on the "right people" list. Being lumped in with the rest of the unwanted must be very upsetting to her.

Agreed. She probably felt like she and Trump were on the same level but failed to realize two things: 1) Trump didn't feel the same and 2) not every transgender person has the privileges and protections she enjoys because of her wealth, fame and race.

I also think that it really hasn't hit home for her how being a rich, white woman is not the same as being a rich, white man. And she will continue to keep getting upset as she learns what those who were born cisgender female have had to deal with their entire lives.

I think this is the case for a lot of trans women who transition late in life, at least at the start. They are so used to being in the male privilege bubble, even if they are also suffering because they are not actually men, that it is a real shock to find out how extremely bad misogyny and transphobia really is for everyone else. Some people listen and learn, some people remain assholes.
